“There are scientific explanations for that,” I tell him.

“Yeah, but in reality, they don’t matter. Knowing why the sky is blue doesn’t make it green.”

“But theydomatter,” I hiss. “Because if we knew what’s wrong with him, we might be able to help him. To make him stop.”

“Don’t start getting angry atme. I do my best to limit the damages. It’s not my fault he has a need to slit people’s throats and cut them into pieces. What can I fucking do apart from cleaning up?”

“I don’t know!” I throw my hands in the air. “At least—”

“Stop talking about me like I’m broken.” I finally recognize Ethan’s voice. Not like the deadly tone I heard earlier. “And stop acting like I’m not right here.”

I bite my inner cheek, observing him silently. He might be a little scary, but…he’s special. Beautiful. He’s not that man from earlier.

But then I get it. I look at him so calm, like he doesn’t care one bit about what he did.

He doesn’t care because death lives inside him. He made it his best friend over the years, living by its side, hoping one day it’ll snatch him for being so familiar.

“The body?” I ask him. His eyes go to Elliot right away.

The blond brother waves a hand in the air, like this is nothing. “Taken care of earlier. That’s why we were out late this morning. I came home, gave you the breakfast Ethan so kindly bought you before killing the cook, and was about to give him a good scolding before sending him to his shower. You’re welcome.” He looks pointedly at his brother. “And you’re welcome.” He smiles at me this time. “Daddy got everyone covered and fed.”

I ignore the fact that I didn’t even touch my breakfast.

My gaze stays on Ethan. “Why?”

“Elliot told you. I wanted to kill him, so I killed someone else.”

“Most people can control their urges to kill,” I say plainly. “Why do you give in to them?”

He smirks. “Because the sky is blue, and I wish it was green.” Shrugging, he stands up. “Because I’m still in love with my ex-girlfriend, and she’s falling for my brother.”

My lips part. “I—I’m not—”

“Watch your mouth,” Elliot cuts me off. Ethan is already leaving.

I’m speechless and I’m not even sure why.

Is it because he admitted to still being in love with me?

Or is it because he pointed out what I’m trying my best to ignore?

That I’m falling for Elliot.

I snap up, striding after Ethan. “Fuck you!”

“Here she is,” he snorts as he turns around. “Getting angry because she can’t fucking take the truth.”

“I can take the truth,” I snap. “But I can’t take a hypocrite. So take it back.”

“Take it back?”

“You don’t love me. You stopped loving me when you broke up with me. Probably before.Stop. Lying.”

“I’m not lying, and I still loved you when I broke up with you.” How can he be so calm? “You want to choose him? Then you have to at least know half the truth, don’t you? Do it while knowing how I feel.”

“Liar.” I can’t take this. They’re playing with my head. The both of them are trying to make me crazy.

“I’m not ly—"
