He grabs my hand and drags me toward the gate again.

“I’ll give you a leg up.”

When I stay frozen on the spot, he grabs my wrists and slams my hands against the gate. He holds me there until he feels the strength coming back to my body. “Come on, Jade. You’re stronger than that.”

Grabbing my waist, he starts lifting me up. It’s the gesture that brings me back. I press my combat boots into the gate with all the need for survival that surges inside me.

“There you go,” he says softly. I pull myself up as he grabs my thighs and pushes me higher. One strong shove from him, and I throw an arm to grab the top of the gate. I feel him grip my ankle and put me on something solid. I glance down to see my foot on his shoulder, and I don’t hesitate to push as I throw my other leg over.

I almost lose my grip when I get to the other side.

“Focus,” he snaps.

Holding myself harder, I slide down, hanging by my hands, and finally let go.

“Atta girl. I need you to be more reactive if you want to make it out of this town alive.”

I can hear him fine, but I can only see him through the gap between the gate and the wall now.

“Wh-why are you helping me? After what I did…you should hate me. What about Elliot?”

“Stop thinking, Jade. It’s time toactnow.”

I nod dumbly, my brain foggy from what just happened.

He shakes his head, coming closer to the gate. We’re standing on either side of it, but I feel the need to reach out for him.

We spent the last year and a half silently hating each other. Me because he broke up with me. Him because I kept sleeping with his brother.

“You got your car keys?”

I nod again with a new fervor. “I do.”

“Then pick up your shit and go.”

It feels wrong to leave just like that. He just saved my life. What am I meant to do now?

I want to touch him. Hug him, kiss him. It’s intense, something I can’t control. I take half a step forward. “Ethan—”

“Hide and hide well,” he growls low. “Because if we find you…I’ll never let you go.”

His black eyes stop me on the spot. I don’t need anything else to conclude the short moment we just shared.

I spin around and sprint to my car. Freedom already tastes bitter.

Undeserved.

Ethan’s thumb tracing my lips brings me back to reality.

Elliot was looking for me because he thought I had stolen money from Kay. But why did Ethan help me leave?

“That’s what you said that day,” I murmur. “That if you found me, you’d never let me go.”

He nods, the guilt in his eyes larger than life itself. “How can I?” he whispers. “If there’s something I know deep down, it’s that you’re mine. Aren’t you, baby?”

He spreads my thighs wider with both hands. Then he wraps them around my waist, squeezing until I can’t breathe.

Kissing my jaw, he traces it until he travels down to my neck. “When did you stop loving me, Jade?”
