I hear a huff. A mumble that it’s fucked up. And then the car door closing.
“Now…where were we?”
“Step the fuck away from her!” There’s a flash of something, blinding me.
The voice is female this time, and I know it from somewhere, but my brain is too messy to understand what’s going on.
His hand retreats, his other one still holding my hair.
“Hey!” he shouts. “Nothing to see here, walk away.”
“I’m filming you,” the female voice says. “I’ve got you on camera, you idiot. Now step away from her.”
I squint my eyes, trying to see past the flash that I now understand is someone’s phone.
My heart is beating in my ears, hope slithering through my veins.
He can’t do anything now. He can’t.
“I’m going to arrest your fucking ass if you don’t stop filming and walk away.”
There’s a little laugh. Too cute to be threatening. “Do you have any idea who I am? It’s incredibly stupid to threaten the daughter of an ex-senator.”
He’s off me in a split second. “What? What’s your name?”
“Me? Alexandra Delacroix. What’syourname, Officer?”
Barbie.
He steps away from the light. The panic in his voice makes me wonder if that’s what I sounded like a minute ago.
“T-This woman is under arrest for illegal street racing. I’m just doing my j—”
“What. Is. Your. Name?”
She comes closer, pointing her phone at his badge. “OfficerHall. Well, you’ve got a whole lot of problems coming your way, Officer Hall. I’d start packing your stuff the second you get back to the station.”
“I’m just…She’s under arrest.”
“Not anymore, she’s not. Uncuff her.”
And just like that. With zero violence or insult from Alex whatsoever, the cuffs are gone.
All it took was one friend with an important name, and I’m…free.
Her arm wraps around my shoulder. “Come, Jade. Let’s go.”
She directs me away from the cop and to a Porsche sitting on the side of the road.
I’m speechless, unable to find anything to say to her.
She helps me sit inside, driving away instantly.
“Jade, are you okay?”
I stare ahead at the road, despite feeling her eyes on me.
“Do you need me to take you to a hospital?”
