Kay tilts her head to the side when looking at a black leather mask with ears. A kitten mask.

“What the fuck?”

“That’s for Jade.” Ethan smiles, and our eyes cross in the mirror again.

A wave of arousal shoots through my body. He’s dressing me as his little kitten.

“Why do we even need masks if no one is meant to see us?” I ask.

“This is just in case. I want everyone to have an alarm set at 9:30 on your phones. If we’re still in the bank when it rings, you put your masks on. No second thoughts, no questions asked.”

She grabs something else from the bag. Three guns. I’m assuming she’s already got hers on her. “If at 9:30, we’re not out of there, we’re doing this the North Shore way. Everyone face down on the floor, and we leave the bank by the front door. Jade, if we’re not out at 9:29, I want you to drive to the front doors with the mask on and wait for us there. We’ll be running out with the bags. That means cops. That means showing us your nice racing skills. Got it?”

I nod. “Got it.”

She puts a reassuring hand on my thigh. “But that won’t happen. Don’t worry.”

I feel weird having her touching me. She’s been nice to me lately, and I don’t like it. Because I know it’s all an act.

“What’s the plan to wash the money?” Elliot asks coolly, but I know this has been a well-thought-out question. Timed perfectly.

He’s been talking to Ethan and me about it for weeks and wanted to make sure he does it at the right moment. Now is it. Kay can’t afford to lose any of us before the robbery or her plan goes to waste. She has to answer him if she wants everything to go smoothly.

She eyes Elliot in the rearview mirror before looking out of the window.

“There’s a house for sale in Stoneview. I’m going to buy it with all of our money. Then I’ll sell it and we’ll split the profit. It’s the only place where they don’t give a shit where your money comes from.”

“Will ten million be enough to buy a house in Stoneview?” Elliot doesn’t sound happy. That town isn’t calledbillionairetown for no reason.

“I am not stupid, Elliot. I know what I’m doing. It’s being sold at an auction next month. It was seized by the government after the guy owning it went to prison. Makes it a little cheaper for us. I’ll get it, don’t worry. I’ll wait about six months and sell it again. That’s everyone with clean bills in their hands.” She eyes me. “You too.”

“What?” My mouth feels numb. “I’m keeping my share?”

She eyes me for a while. “Yeah, your boyfriends convinced me. You get your share, minus fifty grand.”

“Oh my god.” I roll my eyes. “I did not steal that money. How many times do I have to tell you?”

“You can say it as many times as you want. Sawyer said it was at your place. He saw it, and said it was in the bag the Wolves use to transfer money to us. I know you took it when you and Sawyer set up Billie.”

“When Sawyermade meset Billie up. I didn’t want to.” I keep my mouth tight, my teeth gritted. Now isn’t the time to have an argument.

Kayla is about to talk again, when she’s cut off. “I’m the one who stole the money.”

I brake so hard, we all choke on our seatbelts. I’m right at the entrance of Silver Falls, just off the highway, and someone honks as they pass the van. I pull over to the side, my ears ringing.

“What?” I seethe as I turn around.

Ethan’s eyes are trained on his thighs, his hands tight around his mask.

“I stole the money,” he repeats.

“Look at me, Ethan.Fucking look at me!”

He does, regret flooding his eyes. I shake my head, barely able to talk. “Why?”

I can’t find any emotion to display the betrayal I currently feel. It’s too much to even put into words.

“Why did you do that? Why did you…” I swallow thickly, barely able to talk. “Why did you let me take the fall?”
