“I’m going to slow down on the highway to not bring attention to us. If anyone notices anything weird, let me know.”

I still go slightly above the speed limit, making sure we don’t lose the advantage we caught.

I leave the highway one exit early, then speed down smaller roads, and after what feels like forever, we’re at the abandoned warehouse.

We take off our masks, splitting the bags equally between Kay’s car and Ethan’s.

“I should go with you,” I tell Kay.

“No, no, no.” Elliot hurries toward me. “Don’t. Please, don’t.”

“I need some time, Elliot.” My eyes dart to Ethan and the way his fists tighten at his sides. Taking things quietly, as usual.

“You can have all the time you need at home. I’ll give you my room. Whatever you want. Just don’t leave us. Please, Jade.”

“I’m going with Kay,” I say sternly. “Now take your hands off me.”

“My love…”

“Elliot,” Ethan says. “She needs time. Give it to her.”

“We’ll see you at your house,” Kay adds. “Now stop wasting time.”

He lets me go, his eyes still on me as I settle in Kay’s Mercedes. We’re the first to leave, but I don’t look back.

The guys overtake us on the highway, and I look to the side. Elliot put a huge sheet of paper on the window that saysWe’re sorry, and he’s holding it next to his puppy face.

I snort, giving him the middle finger before looking ahead again.

We notice a block of police cars going the opposite way, straight past us. I want to say we got away with it, but I think I should wait until we’re home.

“Your boyfriends are assholes,” Kay says, keeping her eyes on the road.

“I know,” I huff. “I put up with a lot. Too much.”

“Yeah.” She pauses, overtakes a car. “But I think you should forgive them.”

“What?” I choke. “Don’t.” I shake my head. “Put yourself in my shoes for two seconds.Youwouldn’t forgive them. You’re the ruthless Kings’ boss. You wouldn’t stand for that shit.”

She shrugs. “Or maybe I would.”

“You’re saying that because you love them like brothers. It’s different for me. I can’t just keep on forgiving. Ethan let me go for the Kings, Elliot tricked me into becoming his girlfriend. And now I learn that they both knew I hadn’t stolen the money and yet didn’t say anything because they wanted me to be scared. Toneedthem. That’s fucked up, Kay.”

“Yeah, it is,” she agrees. “That’s how I know how much they love you. Because of all the fucked-up things they did to have you.”

“Oh, please. You’ve read too many of those weird dark romance books. I swear.”

She bursts into a laugh. “What? How do you know about those?”

“I’ve been to your house, you know? I’ve been to your room. They’re right there on the bedside table. You have a shelf full of them.”

She blushes. I don’t think I’d ever seen Kayla King blush. “Whatever. I’m a single mom. A girl has needs and mine are dark.”

“No judging here.” I don’t say that I crawled for Ethan and Elliot with a tail in my ass and that I don’t think I can judge anyone.

“All I’m saying is, those two men dedicated their lives to you. Yeah, Ethan fucked up and let you go for a place in our crew. But every fucking day through senior year, and even after, he sat in that stupid chair facing the road to check if you were coming to visit. Elliot had your back, even when he didn’t know you were doing all those horrible things because Sawyer made you. Ethan knew and protected you in silence. He never asked once what it was Sawyer had against you. They made a deal with Caden to protect you after you set up Billie. And fuck knows he wanted to kill you.”

“What even was that?” The idea of being killed by Kayla’s brother sends a shiver down my spine.
