It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done to accept what she said, but it was true. So we waited for our girlfriend to recover. And that was it.

Our jobs within the Kings haven’t changed. The war isn’t over. We will get back at NSC eventually.

“Alright, how are we doing in here? Ready to go home?”

“Fuck yes,” Jade huffs.

Alex widens her eyes at her, silently scolding her for sounding unappreciative of the doctor. “Hello, Dr. Fernandez.” She smiles politely, the complete opposite of my rude girlfriend.

I shake my head at Jade, but can’t help the smile spreading on my face.

She’s alive.

Rude, and annoyed half of the time, and always ready to retort something.

But alive.

She’s smiling as the doctor tells her that she has to keep the nasal cannula on for the first two weeks and then to use it whenever she needs.

Reduced lung function is a life-long complication from a shot wound to the lung. She must keep oxygen on her at all times. Just in case. She has to put the cannula in if she’s going to do anything that could tire her and make it difficult to breathe. The doctor connects her to a portable oxygen container in a bag, tells her how to charge it and check the battery, and schedules her following appointment.

She signs the paperwork and looks up at us. “Take me home.”

And that’s all we needed to hear. Elliot grabs her, an arm under her legs and one at her waist.

“Not that violently, Elliot, for fuck’s sake,” I snap. “She’s still recovering.”

Alex shakes her head at us as I grab the bag containing her oxygen concentrator.

But Jade giggles against his chest and grabs my hand.

“I’m fine. Let’s go home.”

We all walk together outside of the room and to the car. We say bye to Alex, and Elliot settles in the back with her.

“So,” I ask. “Where’s home?”

She smiles at me through the rearview mirror and grabs Elliot’s hand.

“Wherever you two are.”

HONEY (ARE U COMING?) - Måneskin

One month later…

I jog to the front door, barging inside the house. I’m panting, the plastic in my nostrils barely giving me enough to breathe.

But I am so happy.

I run to the living room, bending over, my hands on my knees as I catch my breath.

Elliot, who was watching TV on the sofa, jerks upright.

“What is wrong with you?” he snaps. “You were running again!”
