KAYLA

My phone rings over and over again, but I don’t pick up. I’m driving to the brothers’ house after a meeting with Emma.

A meeting between the two bosses of NSC and the Kings is rare. Once every few years, when the situation has become so bad on the streets that we have to put an end to it to save lives.

People are dying every day. Kings, North Shore Crew. The war is getting too intense because we’ve been pushed in a corner. My people are becoming violent because we have nothing to lose anymore.

I lost the deal with the Wolves.

I lost the money from the robbery.

Well, she stole it. But that’s what we are. Criminals, thieves, murderers. I don’t have the means to take that money back and she knows it.

NSC has a deal with the Cosa Nostra andmyfucking money.

So I couldn’t refuse a meeting with Emma. And I couldn’t refuse her offer.

The bitch got what she wanted: I agreed to a fight in the Death Cage.

Someone is going to die tonight. Either from NSC or the Kings. And only one crew will keep control of the North Shore.

One life lost to save many others.

My phone rings again, making me grunt in frustration.

“Do you want me to take that?”

“No,” I snap at Ivan.

The only Wolf who decided to stay with me. Probably because he’s in love with me. A shame, since I feel nothing for him. An even bigger shame that he isn’t important enough in the organization to change anything about my situation.

I park in front of the brothers’ house and walk in without knocking.

“Please, come in,” Elliot says sarcastically from the sofa.

“Three minutes earlier, and you’d have caught us naked,” Jade laughs, sitting between the two brothers.

She’s wearing her nasal cannula, and something tells me that sex session was pretty intense.

Fuck, I miss good sex. Ivan doesn’t provide that.

“What’s up?” Ethan asks. He nods at Ivan and stands up, grabbing two chairs for us and putting them next to the coffee table.

But I’m unable to sit.

“I have news.”

If there’s one thing I hate in life, it’s disappointing my crew. My priorities are my daughters first, my crew second.

“What’s wrong?” Elliot sits straighter, forcing Jade’s head off his chest where it was resting.

I look at my feet. “You guys know I’d do anything to protect you. But things are getting out of hand. The Kings’ grip on the North Shore is…pretty much non-existent.” I lick my lips and look up. “I agreed to a fight in the Death Cage.”

“What?” Jade gasps. “When?”

“Tonight.”
