A week later, I drove to his and Logan’s repair shop in a panic.

I’m leaving. You have to take my car.

He knew what was happening already.Leaving? You’re not fucking leaving. You’re running! I can’t keep this for you. If the Kings see it, they’ll burn this place down.

But he was stuck because owing someone on the North Shore means everything. A favor is a favor. It doesn’t matter who, where, when.

You owe me, Racer. I saved your ass. Keep it for me. Hide it. Here’s my new address. I remember folding the small piece of paper and snapping it away before he could grab it.Do not give this to anyone. When things calm down, drive it to me. Don’t let anyone see you.

Then I let him take it. He didn’t unfold it in front of me. He stayed in place when I shoved the keys in his hand.

You’re a traitor. You betrayed your crew. The shock kept him from saying anything else.

It didn’t stop me.I didn’t betray my crew, I hissed.I would never.

He didn’t believe me. I didn’t care. I was too worried about getting caught, and Stan was going to pick me up. I left it with him because I had no one else and no time to find a better solution. I gave him the address because he was supposed to drive it to me.

“Instead of bringing it to me, you gave my address to Xi.”

“You said to not let anyone see me,” he fights back weakly. “Do you really think I can drive a pink Mazda RX-7 across the North Shore? One that has an exhaust we can hear across town. I kept the car hidden. I did my part.”

“You sold me out to the Kings by giving it to Xi. You signed my death warrant.”

“Xi would be the last person to give your address to the brothers. Why would he want them to find you? Whatever Elliot and Ethan want, Xi wants the exact opposite. He had some leverage against them, and I was free of the weight of your location.”

Blood boiling, I talk in his face again, hissing through clenched teeth. “And yet here wefuckingare. They found me. Why would he tell them?”

“Because he fell in love and that clearly fucked with his brain.” Logan grabs me again as he says that. He’s a little less delicate this time, shoving me away from his boyfriend. “Now let me remind you that you’re on NSC territory and that we have no obligation to be kind to you. Don’t piss me off and take a few seconds to calm down.”

I’m panting with anger as I stumble back. Taking his advice, I walk toward the towers of tires and press the nail of my thumb against the wear bars, playing with the ridges. When I feel my heartbeat settle, I turn around. They’re both facing me, next to the other.

“Okay.” I nod. “Where is it? Give it back to me and we’re done.”

Racer’s eyes are still looking guilty as he goes to the back of the shop, but Logan stares daggers at me like I ran over his puppy. Maybe one day I’ll have someone protective over me like that.

Who am I kidding? The only person offering me protection is taking my body in exchange.

Racer comes back with a set of keys for a Mercedes and I’m about to lose my shit when he puts a hand up. “I took the main key out of yours and put this Mercedes plastic cover on it. I didn’t want anyone to see I had a Mazda key.”

Logan is currently reversing one of the many cars parked in here. It reveals a car protected by a beige cover. I’d recognize the shape of my baby anywhere.

“Fuck yes.” I smile.

“Um, there’s something else…” Racer hesitates.

My eyes narrow on him and his dart to Logan just as he uncovers a black Mazda RX-7.

“Racer!” I shout with frustration.

“Do you think it’s easy to hide apink fucking car?”

“You had a cover on it! Why paint it black?”

“No risks,” he repeats. “I made that decision the day after they destroyed the fucking garage. Do you know the kind of shit they did to find you?”

Everything is gone. The pink, the stickers. The… “You took out my wing,” I gasp.

“So it wouldn’t bring attention. I’ll put it back.” He sighs. “I took care of your baby, Jade. I made sure to change the battery. Once I painted it, I took it for a drive once in a while.”
