I fake a pout at my opponent and shake my head. Nothing is funnier than playing with entitled men. “Please, be nice. I still struggle to shift gears.”

"Let’s add to the bet. I’ll throw in another grand. You throw your car and a ride in mine with my cock down your throat.”

“An extra grand? Is that what you think my blow jobs are worth? Come on, give me more credit than that.” I trace my tongue along my upper lip suggestively and wink at him.

This is fun. It’ll be even funnier when I leave with the money.

“Alright, five grand in total,” he agrees.

“THREE,” Faith starts shouting, pointing a scarf at me with her right hand. She’s standing in front of our two cars, right in between us. I nod at her.

“That’s a big boy,” I tell him in a sickly-sweet voice.

“TWO,” Faith continues, pointing another scarf with her left hand at the guy next to me. He nods at her.

“I can’t wait to drive your car away from this place.” He smirks.

“ONE…” She lifts the scarfs above her head, extending her arms to the sky, and I press the gas pedal at the same time as I slowly release the pressure from my clutch. I rev my engine, ready to speed away.

“Oh, sweetie,” I chuckle. “You wouldn’t know what to do with my car.”

“Race!” The moment Faith brings the scarfs down, I release my clutch and we’re both gone in a split second.

His car is brand new, so it picks up speed quicker than mine. I do need to rework the engine if I want to keep up with everything that was made in the last two years. But his is premade. Low quality for an expensive price. At the first corner, I go on the inside and overtake. He doesn’t hold as well, and he loses too much speed when I accelerate again.

On the next corner, he’s scared and brakes too early, throwing his chance of getting back in front of me. I brake at the last second, drifting around a building and sending smoke behind me.

We’re on the last straight line, his nose on my ass, but I’m not worried. There’s enough of the race left for me to put more distance between us.

There is nothing like the last few seconds of a race. When I see the crowd getting closer, the finish line just out of reach, my brain lets go of everything that worries me to focus on nothing else but the win. That’s when my heart stops beating in preparation for the excitement.

Freedom at the tips of my fingers.

I cross the imaginary line with at least two seconds on him. He didn’t stand a chance.

I’m laughing when I stumble out of the car, drunk on adrenaline, with My Chemical Romance still screaming. My head is light, and I can’t feel my body. Butterflies swarm my stomach as the crowd heads my way and Faith takes me in her arms.

First night back, first win in two years.

And yet nothing feels the same. Elliot isn’t here to grab me in his arms. I don’t get an impressed look from Caden or a mumbledwell donefrom Ethan that means everything.

Taking the five grand from the sulking rich kid, I slap his shoulder. “Well tried.” I pop a bubble as he waits for my next words. “But you’re a shit driver with too much money.”

Faith wraps her arms around my shoulders and drags me toward the trunk of her car. She’s got bottles of beer, and she’s right next to the car blaring a rock song much louder than mine.

“Welcome back,” she laughs as I give her her share. “I’m glad you kept up with the expectations.”

“Muscle memory, am I right?”

She nods, taking a sip of a beer. “That’s right.” She checks the time and takes another swig. “I have to get ready for the next guys. Stay as long as you want, help yourself to anything. I’ll catch you after.”

As soon as she’s off, I check the burner phone Kay gave me. There are three missed calls from Elliot and one text.
