Oh. This isn’t good at all.

“Because you’re only good at attempting, yet failing miserably, to fuck her. I’m going to take care of her.”

“Because you’re not tempted to fuck her,” I scoff. “Of course.”

His jaw works from side to side as he combs his hair back. It brings my attention to the thick black strands. They look damp and his cheeks are red. Like he’s been in the cold.

“Where have you been?” I ask seriously.

He disappeared earlier tonight while I was torturing Stephen for info, but I didn’t realize he’d gone out. I thought he was locked in his room. The music is still playing in there,“Misfits”by Magnolia Park and Taylor Acorn. He clearly wanted me to think he was home.

Ignoring my question, he takes off his shirt, plenty of his tattoos on display on his golden skin, and uses it to dab the blood spilling from her eyebrow.

“Elliot,” he insists. “Put her on my bed.”

Broody, muscly, tortured artist. He is Jade’s walking wet dream right now. She’s always loved him for his broken soul, a stark contrast to my manipulative, sharp mind. My brother and I are complete opposites. I know him by heart. If he starts caring for her…we’re done. She’ll fall back in his clutches, and I don’t want that at all.

“No.”

That’s all I say before I sidestep him and start walking to my bedroom.

“Elliot,” he barks after me, trying to grab my arm.

I shrug him off easily. “I can kick your skinny ass while holding her,” I hiss. “Don’t fucking try me.”

He takes a step back, shocked by my words. He’s not skinny. Not anymore. He’s a fucking hard dude who could punch the lights out of me. But it’s all about knowing someone’s brain and what makes them tick. What makes themweak.

Ethan has no confidence in his physical abilities. That’s why he feels the need to get into fights and break people’s bones. That’s why he kills people. So he can keep proving to himself he’s not the poor bullied boy from high school anymore. I can crush that confidence easily.

He leaves me alone when I walk to my room again, but it’s Jade’s voice that stops me this time.

“Ethan.”

“Wrong brother, my love.”

“It was Ethan.”

She groans when she comes to her senses.

“Shit,” she gasps as she tries to shift in bed.

She hasn’t noticed me yet. I’m watching her from my bedroom doorway, leaning against the frame with my arms crossed over my chest.

Her head is propped on two pillows, but she’s not aware of much. She winces when she tries to sit up, and it takes everything in me to not help her.

We have something to settle first.

I notice the exact moment she feels the band of leather around her throat. Her brows furrow in confusion, her hands going to touch it, even if it means she hisses in pain. Her eyes widen when she finally manages to bring two hands to her throat, feeling for the collar around her neck.

“What…” she rasps.

She jerks into a sitting position, whimpering from the pain. The second she attempts to move forward, she’s brought back.

“What the fuck.” An enraged panic settles on her face when she turns around and looks at the chain bolted to the wall…and leading right to her neck. “Elliot!” she shouts, then winces right away. “What the fuck is that?”

“A chain,” I reply casually.

She startles, realizing I’m right there in the dark, observing her.
