“Do you miss him?”

My eyes widen when I realize what slipped out of my mouth.

Never talk to Elliot about his father.

His brow furrows as he looks down at me, his hand on my jaw tightening.

“Th-that just came out,” I stutter. “I don’t know how.” I try to shift slightly away from him, but his grip doesn’t relent.

The violence in his blue gaze makes me tremble. He puts a knee on the bed, leaning closer to me, and…smiles. He’s back under control. Just like that.

“Do you know what happens to bad girls who can’t keep their mouths shut, my love?”

I gulp, shaking my head. Not death, I hope.

“They get gagged. How unfortunate would that be for you just before breakfast?”

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, my gaze still fixed on his scars.

“Maybe if you were less focused on my scars and a little more on how to please me, you wouldn’t spurt out ridiculous questions.”

When I don’t answer, he drags my face to his. “Isn’t that right, Jade?”

My hands are forced to land on said scars, so I don’t crash into him. “Yes.”

“I’m going to undo the leash,” he says against my mouth, his low voice vibrating against my lips. “What’s the lesson you learned?”

My heart accelerates. Like when a teacher used to surprise me with a question at school. I wasn’t good, never listened. Then they’d just drop some stupid question, and everyone would turn to me, expecting something.

I thought ugly people were smart.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I push away the remark I remember so well.

I know the answer to his question. It’s just too humiliating to voice it.

“Jade.” His free hand grabs the chain connected to the collar, and he pulls harshly. I’m forced a little closer to him, our lips practically touching.

“Fuck,” I gasp.

“What’s the lesson you learned?” he repeats.

“Not to leave the house,” I squeak. “Shit, I can’t breathe.”

“You can breathe just fine, or you wouldn’t be able to talk. Say it again.”

“I shouldn’t leave the house without you.”

"That’s right.” His condescending smile accompanies his tone perfectly. “Someone wants you dead. I want you alive. Easy.”

I nod frantically, and his hand caresses my hairline, down my curls, and all the way to the deep brown tips.

Wrapping the ends around his fist, he pulls my head back, and his lips crash onto mine. He only kisses me for a split second, barely enough time for me to register the stroke of his tongue against my lips. Then he focuses on my lower lip. He bites it, sucking it like he loves doing. My body buzzes as I feel it swelling. He keeps going long enough to hurt.

I whimper against him, and he only pulls away when I slap his shoulder. I’m panting, my eyes jumping from his to his lips.

“Let’s get you fed and working on that van, my love.”

He stands up to grab a key from his desk, one I can’t reach if I’m bolted to the wall. As promised, he undoes the chain, but not the collar.
