We spend two hours at our guy’s house. Our guy being the doctor who works for the Kings. I don’t even know his name. He fixes us whenever a band-aid doesn’t suffice, and Elliot definitely needs a good stitching and some painkillers. I still wonder how he’s not even sweating.

Elliot pays him a hefty amount to keep his mouth shut and not let Kay know what happened today.

“Hiding shit from your boss, huh?” I say quietly as I hoist myself up on a dresser near the back wall, facing the metal table Elliot sits on. I’m not taunting him, just trying to relax the tension in my head.

“Kay doesn’t need to know I gave in to your tantrum. Going to an NSC repair shop. Another great idea, my love.”

I roll my eyes. “We got a free engine.”

“For the price of my shoulder. Great deal.”

His sarcasm makes me laugh. “Shut up, you’re being stitched.” I tilt my head to the side. “Do you even feel pain?”

“Only the pain of you denying I’m your boyfriend. I know you’re not the commitment type since you and Ethan didn’t end in the best way, but do you know how many women would die to be in your place?”

I shrug, picking at my fishnets. “Don’t let those poor, innocent souls die. You and I are as incompatible as they come.”

“I don’t wantthem,Jade. I want you,” he growls.

When I look up, his eyes are on me. Despite currently having a needle going in and out of his wound, I see nothing but the frustration that I won’t give in to his ludicrous demand.

“You have my body. You need my heart for me to be your girlfriend.” My gaze drops when I add, “You don’t have my heart, Elliot.”

Why can’t I look him in the eye when I say that? Elliot can’t have my heart for many reasons. Mainly because no one can, since a part of it still belongs to Ethan.

“How dare you say this to me after that kiss?”

My mouth parts at the boldness of him putting that kiss into words.

Of course. Of course, I feel like a fraud saying that after our earlier kiss. The things I felt were strong enough to drive away any fear of death. Any disturbing thoughts of Elliot admitting he had Zara killed to find me.

Elliot terrifies me for so many reasons. What if the main one is that he wants me badly enough to make me give in?

The silence is broken by such simple words they shouldn’t even have the right to be spoken.

“Does Ethan have it?"

My eyes dart to our guy. He’s working quietly, ignoring our conversation. He rarely talks. He takes money, does his job, and pretends he doesn’t hear or see anything.

Still, I feel weird talking about our situation in front of him.

“This isn’t the right time to talk about this,” I mumble, going back to playing with the strings of the fishnets.

“I decide when we talk about what. Answer me.”

I can’t look him in the eye. “You were so good at pretending you’re a nice guy today. Why don’t you go back to that and leave me alone.”

The clattering of metal against the floor makes me look up. “A nice guy?” he snorts. “You think I’m anice guy, Jade?”

The doctor picks up the surgical tweezers he dropped when Elliot stood up in a sudden movement. He steps back, knowing trouble when he sees it.

“I don’t think you’re a nice guy,” I correct him. “But youpretendso well, one sometimes wonders who you really are.”

He chuckles coldly, and I gulp the ball forming at the back of my throat. Fear.

“Oh baby, you look so confused. Would you like me to explain who I am?"

“I just—”
