The blood in Rush’s veins boiled, his dragon begging to come out and rip this fucker apart. “Your father is holding court.” Rush strode from the room as if the sight of Pax’s face didn’t affect him at all. “Let’s have a chat in front of everyone, shall we?”

Rush retraced his steps through the palace with Pax yapping at his heels.

“This is outrageous,” he almost shouted. “You’re aking. Is this how you should behave?” When Rush ignored the comments, the prince huffed. “You couldn’t let me be happy, could you? The past is controlling you.”

The audacity.

The taste of ash flooded his mouth and smoke filled his nostrils. His dragon dug his claws into Rush, preparing to release himself. Rush shoved the beast down. If he could simply kill Pax right here in his own palace, he would—but he had somethingmuchsweeter in store for the prince.

“This is a political nightmare,” Pax continued. “You can’t take a member of the royal family and not expect consequences.”

The truenightmarefor him would be when Rush completed the spell. Then Pax could come to Moonstone and see if he could find Aura himself, albeit in a deep sleep. “She’s not a royal though, is she? The wedding didn’t take place.”

“Because ofyou.”

“Oh?” He smirked knowingly. “I heard a rumor that the entire event was delayed because you were fucking someone.”

“You prick! What I do and with whom is none of your damn business.”

Rush shrugged. It really wasn’t—but Aura was none of Pax’s business now that she’d called off the engagement.

“You forced her to write that letter, didn’t you?” he seethed.

Rush quirked a brow. “What letter?”

Red flooded into Pax’s cheeks and he muttered under his breath. Something about Rush being a liar, but it was too hard to make out every word. Poor, pathetic Pax. Too embarrassed to admit his fiancée left him at the altar.

They passed guards and nameless nobles in the gilded halls. Rush ignored them all until he came to a halt outside the throne room. “After you, Your Highness.”

“Absolutely absurd,” Pax muttered. “My father will not take kindly to your actions today.”

Rush flicked a hand through the air, wishing he could stab the prince in the throat instead. But he was patient. He could wait for his revenge. “If I gave a fuck, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Pax rolled his eyes and pushed into the throne room. People stood in small groups, all wearing their finest silks and velvets, chatting amongst themselves. The king perched on his circular throne. A gold back arched up over him with stars carved into the curves. Rush hadn’t seen Quinton in a while, but he looked just the same except for a few grays streaking his dark hair. It seemed Pax would be waiting a long time to rule Starnight if his father was as healthy as he appeared.

Once the king spotted his son, he smiled, a few fine wrinkles deepening. Then his gaze fastened on Rush and King Quinton shot to his feet. “I heard you madequitethe entrance.”

“Is that any way to greet a fellow monarch?” Rush knocked into Pax’s shoulder as he sauntered into the room. “After receiving your letter, I thought it important to visit.”

“My chambers,” the king demanded, stepping down from his throne. “Now.”

“No need.” Rush grinned at the nobility, their gazes pinned to him. Some in shock or fear. Some with lust in their eyes as they took in his bare torso. “I’ve only come to give my response in person, then I’ll be on my merry way.”

“Your Majesty,” Quinton warned. “This is highly inappropriate.”

“No.” Rush prowled halfway to the throne before halting. “It’s inappropriate to threaten a sovereign with war when it wasyourfault for failing to protect the would-be princess of Starnight.”

“A black dragon flew off with her!” Quinton snapped. “What were we to do against that? And whatotherdragon would you have us suspect?”

Rush shrugged. “Any of them.”

“It was you,” the king nearly shouted, his voice quaking with anger.

“Hear me, King Quinton.” Rush allowed a few scales to appear over his face, chest, and arms. “I have stolen no one’s fiancée. Keep slandering me and you will discover what it means to go to war with a dragon king.”

It wasn’t a lie—Aura wasn’t betrothed any longer after she sent her letter. And Starnight would fall within days against Rush’s army.

“Do you expect us to take you at your word?” Pax asked.
