How… did I get here? Where’s Noah?

My recollections abandoned me as soon as I felt blood oozing down my right temple. I wanted to turn my head toward Noah’s seat, but the pain was agonizing; my seat belt was almost choking me. Covered in broken glass, the potent smell of gasoline irritated my lungs as I coughed uncontrollably.

Noah…

Twisting my neck in his direction, I groaned in pain and passed out.

Sirens, screaming, car horns… all of it stopped, except for that annoying beeping noise.

Beep… beep…

“Aria, listen to my voice, sweetheart. Squeeze my hand if you can hear me.”

My eyelids felt so heavy.

“Please, baby… try.”

I don’t understand what’s happened.

The reality I knew had evaporated. I wanted to run back to that hotel room and hide myself in Noah’s arms, but there was nowhere to go. All I could see was black.

“Aria, I love you so much…”

Is he crying? Oh, my god…

I had never heard such devastating cries of agony in my life. I had to open my eyes. I had to comfort him.

Come on! Just wake up!I scolded myself, commanding my body to move.

“I can’t live without you,” he painfully expressed.

Something wet dripped onto my forearm before I realized it was Noah’s tears. He was holding my hand and talking to me.

How come I can’t move?

I couldn’t lift a finger, which paralyzed me in fear.

“I can’t pull the plug, Aria. Do you hear me? I can’t do it! So you better fight! You better fight for your life, because you’re fighting for mine as well!” He squeezed my hand harder and murmured in my ear, “I can’t exist without you. I don’t know how to after finding you. Please… please come back to me.”

He needed to know that I could hear him—that I was conscious.

“Please.” He sobbed. “Please don’t punish me this way. I know you can hear me. Don’t make me suffer like this. I’m already broken. I’m desperate, Aria. I’ve never been so desperate in my life. I’ve never felt this way about anyone. Please open your eyes. I won’t ever let you go if you do.” He cried like a man who had scarred his soul, pressing my hand to his cheek.

My heart had shattered. There was nothing I could do. I couldn’t understand what was going on with me. I had no choice but to listen to the agonizing cries of the man I loved.

“Baby, please… I’ve been at your bedside for the past five weeks. I’ve been playing your music on your iPod, talking to you, praying you’ll wake up.” He kissed my hand, sniffling. “The doctors said the chances of you waking up are very slim and that I should prepare to say goodbye to you. But I can’t, Aria. I can’t say goodbye.” He broke down. “You came into my life like a miracle eight months ago. And now, I don’t know how to survive in this world without you. You’re not supposed to die before me. I’m not supposed to bury you.”

Noah’s heaving sobs made me want to cry. I was screaming inside.

“Don’t leave me… don’t… leave.”

What a cruel twist of fate this was. I would have much rather died than to have been consciously aware of my paralysis.

You’re in a hospital bed, dummy! That possibility only scared me more as I listened to a heart monitor.

Composing himself, Noah blew his nose before he lowered his voice and spoke to me.

“I’m gonna tell you something, Aria. Take me seriously because I’m only gonna say this once, and one time only. If you love me like you say you do, if you’re truly who I believe you are, then you’ll wake up. Listen to my voice. Please try, baby.” He sniffled, caressing my hair. “Aria Sophia Hunter,” Noah murmured in my ear. “You are the love of my life. I fell in love with you from the moment I first saw you. To exist in this world without you is comparable to living without a heart in my chest. I would rather die, and I know exactly how I intend to destroy myself if you don’t come back to me. If you really are my soulmate, then please open your eyes.”
