“There’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you.”

She met my gaze and said, “What’s up?”

“How come you lied to me about accepting your offer of admission to Berkley?”

Expecting a detailed explanation, all I got from her was a shrug.

“When were you gonna tell me you were planning to go to Columbia?” I asked.

“How did you find out?”

“I received your registration package from the university two weeks ago. How come you changed your mind? I thought you were excited about going to Berkeley. They had offered you a great scholarship.”

Patiently, I waited for a response, but all she said was, “Could you please pass me my mints? They’re in that drawer.”

“You’re avoiding my question.” I grabbed the mints and gave them to her.

“It seemed like the best choice,” she explained.

“Then how come you didn’t tell me? You know how much I value your education.”

“Because I knew you’d try to change my mind and wouldn’t be happy with my decision.”

“I would have eventually found out. How did you expect me to react, then?”

“I didn’t think you’d care.”

She couldn’t have been serious.

“Baby, come on now.” I grimaced. “Tell it to me straight.”

“You already know the reason, Noah. It’s difficult to be around you, let alone be in the same state as you. I thought if I moved away, it would be easier on both of us.”

Her reasoning was logical. It just hurt to think about being so far from her for the next four years.

“On a lighter note,” I said, “they’re offering you a thirty-thousand-dollar scholarship.”

“Cool.”

I’d been hoping for a more enthusiastic reaction, but she didn’t look that excited. Perhaps she was too tired to talk.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Aria said.

“I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable. I’m just happy you’re out of that coma. You don’t know how hard it’s been for your mother and me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry.” I took her hand. “I’m so grateful you’re alive.”

“Can we cuddle?”

“I don’t know if I can fit next to you—it’ll be a tight squeeze.”

“I don’t mind.” She shifted over. “I can make room.”

Carefully, I reclined next to her, stretching my legs. She felt warm as I wrapped an arm around her shoulder, pulling her to my chest.

“Are you comfortable?” I asked.
