Evan leaned against the doorframe and watched her disappear down the hall, staring at her shapely bottom.

I’ll give you something better than pancakes… soon.

It had rained through the night as Aria kept tossing and turning in her sleep. A nightmare had plagued her peaceful slumber, terrorizing her as she mumbled in her sleep.

“No… no… please don’t!” she whimpered, rolling on her side.

Thunder clapped in the sky as Evan’s eyes snapped wide open when he heard a scream. Immediately, he threw his body out of bed and rushed toward the guestroom. Not bothering to knock, he stormed in, half panicked.

“Aria!”

Sitting up in the darkness, she tried to calm her breathing.

“Are you okay, love?” He approached her.

“I had a nightmare. I’m sorry I woke you.”

“Don’t apologize.”

She ran her fingers through her tousled hair and met his worried gaze.

The lightning lit up the room at random intervals while Evan walked toward the window and closed it. “I just panicked when I heard you scream. You scared me. I thought someone was trying to murder you.” He looked back at her in relief, retracing his steps to the bed. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No. Thanks, though. I’m sorry I woke you up.”

“Stop saying sorry. I was already awake.”

Another loud crash of thunder roared in the sky. Aria hugged her knees to her chest.

“This storm sounds angry,” he added.

“Are you a light sleeper?”

“The slightest sounds can wake me.”

“That sucks.”

“Sometimes.” Evan paused. “I’m gonna get you a glass of water. That usually calms me down when I have nightmares.”

“Do you have them frequently?”

“I used to get bad night terrors when I was a kid. Not so much anymore.” He placed a hand on her knee. “Sit tight, love.” Lightning flashed outside the window and lit up the room.

Aria’s heart suddenly dropped when she recognized a tattoo on Evan’s back. Blinking, she was sure it was no delusion. A black cross had been inked on his back with a pentacle drawn through it, and a crescent moon above—identical to the one she had seen on the male model in the photos.

The man in the pictures… is Evan. She concluded in silence.

Returning shortly, he noticed his niece wasn’t in bed anymore. He found her standing by the window as lightning buzzed behind her.

“Why’d you get out of bed?” he asked, noticing her knotted shirt, exposing her midriff, which only triggered movement below when his eyes cascaded to her thong.

“I needed to stretch my legs,” she replied.

“Here”—he handed her the glass—“drink this. You’ll feel better.”

“Thanks.” Aria took a couple sips and drank it all down, not realizing how thirsty she was. A calm silence fell between them as her mind wandered.
