“Do you know when he’ll be back?”

“Maybe an hour,” she replied, “depending on how the meeting goes.”

My disappointment was visible, but I tried not to show any signs of distress.

“Isn’t it a school day for you, young lady?”

“I have a last period spare. I need to see my dad.”

“Is it an emergency?”

“Sort of.”

“I’ll let you in,” she said, escorting me. “If all goes well, he should be back within the hour.”

Noah’s office was more than spacious. The first thing that caught my eye was his name inscribed on the glass wall that had separated his workspace from the rest of the firm:

NOAH HUNTER

SENIOR PARTNER

How was I ever going to measure up to his success? His work desk was enormous, with a laptop resting on it—some pens, and a phone. The black leather office chair was nerve-racking to stare at. How was he able to manage the pressure of his job? I wondered. Then again… it was Noah. He could handle just about anything, except for me.

Observing my surroundings, his office had a modern theme with a shelf full of law books in one corner. I could see palm trees and the ocean in the distance as I looked out the window. The view was gorgeous.

Noah’s office was quiet. The glass barrier was soundproof. I couldn’t hear the buzzing noise of workplace traffic any longer. An office job was not for me. I had yet to find my true calling.

As I sat on a loveseat, Dianne suddenly walked in bearing gifts: fashion magazines. Her perfume smelled amazing, and I loved her energy.

“I’ve got a little something for you to read while you wait.”

“That’s kind of you.” I smiled.

“Would you like anything to eat or drink?”

“No, thank you. I don’t wish to distract you from work.”

“I want to make sure you’re taken care of. You’re my boss’s daughter—and between you and me, he’s the most loved and respected senior partner at this firm.”

That didn’t surprise me. Who wouldn’tlove Noah?

“Well,” she sighed. “Back to work! Give me a shout if you need me.”

Seating myself, I flipped through pages ofVogueand tried to stop overthinking.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

A pair of guilty adulterers sat in a yellow Mustang parked in a private lot of an establishment. Amir and Vanessa had been arguing nonstop for the past ten minutes. Prior to leaving the house, she had thrown out the remains of Aria’s burned cellphone and called for maid service to tidy up the mess they had made in the bedroom.

“Shit!” cursed Vanessa. “What are we gonna do?” She ran her fingers through her hair in distress.

“Relax, babe. We destroyed the cellphone and trashed it out of the house. I’ve already got an alibi if Noah confronts me. I told you it was risky coming over.”

“That annoying bitch is gonna ruin everything! Not only will she destroy my life if Noah finds out, but yours as well!”

“Calm down.” Amir touched her thigh. “As long as we stick to our story, we’ll be fine. It’s been over a year, and he still hasn’t clued in. We’ve done it this long. He’s never suspected a thing… neither has my wife.”
