My legs almost give out at those words, and Blaze reaches out to catch me. “What does that mean?”

“Jaxon sealed his fate the moment he walked into my life and lied to my fucking face. There’s nothing he could have said to stop what I had to do.”Said?

“Kane,” I say with a shaky voice. “Did you kill him?”

The line goes dead, and I lock eyes with Blaze. He pulls me into his chest. “It’s okay, Sweetheart.” We move to the couch, and he curls me into his lap. Blaze's body is still tense, and every once in a while, he’ll say something under his breath. I know it hasn’t been this bad in a long time, and this thing with Jaxon has sent him over the edge. I don’t know if we’ll ever get him back. I think about what Kane said, and a sob erupts before I can stop it. This whole situation is fucked, and I know Kane has to protect his name.

But killing Jaxon wasn’t the answer.

* * *

Hours later, I hear the front door open and shoot off the couch. Kane walks in, and the look on his face makes my heart stop. It’s a hard mask with dark circles under his eyes. He’s gritting his teeth so hard I’m surprised they don’t crack.

“Kane?”

He opens his arms, and I go willingly. He’s holding me so tight that I’m afraid he might crack a rib, but I’m going to give him whatever he needs. “Dragotsennyy.” Kane’s voice comes out low, and he sounds so damn tired.

“What happened?”

He kisses my forehead, grabs my hand, and leads me to the living room, where he tucks me between him and Blaze. Kane takes one look at Blaze, and he already knows how bad it is. “Is he dead?” Blaze demands.

Kane sighs and leans back on the couch. “Not yet. I took him to Diego until I figure out what to do.”

“What?” Blaze barks. “He should be dead, Kane. He betrayed you.”

“I know very well what he did,” Kane says in a deadly tone. “But this isn’t just some random person, Blaze. This is the man I planned to marry.”

I snuggle closer to Kane, wishing I could take that heartbroken look out of his eyes. “I’m so sorry, Kane. Did you figure anything else out?”

“According to him, he just graduated, and they pulled him to set me up. The watch he gave me? It had a fucking tracker in it, and he was tipping them off when we were leaving. That’s how they were finding us.”

“So, he’s the reason we got arrested?”

“Yes.”

I shake my head. “I don’t think so. We were asleep when all of that went down, and Jaxon looked as shocked as me.”

Kane rubs his knuckles down my cheek. “He played us all,Dragotsennyy. None of what he said or did was true.”

“I don’t believe that. Kane, you can’t fake the love in his eyes. He might have started out to deceive you, but I think he really fell in love. He took punishment from Blaze, for fucks sake.”

“It was all part of the game, Sweetheart.”

I start getting pissed off and stand from the couch. “I know that you guys have a certain code that you have to go by, and you’re blinded by the hurt right now. But you need to open your fucking eyes andlistento him.”

“Where are you going?” Blaze demands when I walk toward the door.

“To see Jaxon.”

Before my hand hits the handle, Blaze pushes in front of me. “I’ll be damned. You won’t be going anywhere near him.”

“Blaze,” I say patiently. “I need to see him. I’m going to find out what the hell is going on since you two can’t seem to get your heads out of your asses.”

“Who do you think you’re talking to, Pet?” Blaze’s voice has switched to his dominant tone, and I struggle to ignore it. “You aren’t going. Go to our room and wait for me.”

“No.” Blaze’s eyes narrow, and I’m trying my damndest to hold his stare. “You need to let me go.”

“Pet—”
