“NYU,” she replies promptly, flashing Bill a winning smile as he appraises her. Maxwell’s eyes dart between Tiffany and me.

Bill smirks. Uh oh, he’s going in for the kill. “Very good. And what was the name of her favorite foster family?”

Oh fuck. Fuckity fucking fuck. Timothy starts beside me at the question and glances down, but I’m too busy vigorously shaking my head at Tiffany and mouthing “no”. Tiffany looks confused, but her face clears up.

“She didn’t live with any foster families,” she finally settles on. Bill stares at her for a long moment with a neutral expression until she squirms.

“I thought I had you with that one.” He glances over at the doorway, where Gladys has appeared.

“Telephone, sir.”

Nodding, Bill heads out of the room, pausing in the doorway and turning to fix his gaze on me. “I saw that, Angie.”

Oops. Busted. I raise my eyebrows at him as he turns and leaves the room. As soon as he’s gone, Tiffany rounds on me with her eyes narrowed.

“Youknewthat he’d pump us for information,” she accuses me as I blink innocently back at her.

“If I knew about it, why did I help you?”

Sarah glares at me, joining in. “Well, you didn’t help us very well. Mr. Westerhavensawyou.”

“He didn’t see me,” I tell her confidently. Sarah plants her hands on her hips.

“He said he did.”

I sigh, gesturing to Tiffany. “It’s notmyfault she got the last question wrong.”

Tiffany frowns. “You were shaking your head and silently screaming ‘no’ at me. How did I get it wrong?”

I roll my eyes at her. “No, didn’t mean I didn’t live in foster care. No meant I didn’t have a favorite family. They were all assholes.”

“Well, how was I supposed to know that?” Tiffany scowls at me, screwing up her nose.

“I need to powder my nose, coming Tiffany?” Sarah drawls, her glare telling me in no uncertain terms that I’mnotinvited.

They link arms and leave the room, and it’s me and all five of Bill’s nephews, standing around awkwardly.

“Thanks for trying,” Maxwell calls over to me, shoving his free hand in his pocket while he drains his whiskey.

Ha ha ha, no. “Yeah, don’t thank me.I don’t lie to Bill. He already knew that neither of them spoke a single word to me the entire time we were gone.”

Timothy is trying not to laugh, and Beaumont is staring at me with his mouth open while David is openly chuckling. Ryan and Maxwell are glaring at me like I insulted their mothers.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ryan demands. I turn to him with a sigh.

“Bill asked me how they treated me when we first got back. I told him the truth. They were indifferent. Didn’t say a word.” I shrug again while Ryan blusters, and Maxwell studies me carefully.

“So, you told him they were rude to you?” he asks at last, his tone tight. Uh, that’s not what I said. I shake my head.

“No. That would have been a lie. No one was rude to me; they mainly acted like I wasn’t there. It didn’t bother me in the slightest.”

“How could being ignored like that not bother you? I think you deliberately set the girls up because it hurt you that they ignored you,” Ryan scoffs. I managed to keep my composure so far, but I actually snort at Ryan’s statement.

“Yeah, no. My aim in life is to fly under the radar and mainly be ignored. It makes mefantasticat my job.”

“Your job?” David jumps on my slip up. Oops. I turn to him with a beaming smile.

“Yeah. Spy. Remember?”
