Danny tips his head, an acknowledgement of my decision, though by no means an acceptance of it. “I don’t like this.”

“I know,” I say, resting my head against his chest, his steady heartbeat under my ear reassuring.

“This isn’t happening until I’m confident of the plan.”

“Of course.”

My instant agreement has his muscles relaxing and I realize just how nervous he is about this. He doesn’t want me to do this, but he won’t stop me.

Instead, he’ll ensure that every variable is weighed, every precaution taken, and every feasible sets of eyes and bodies are watching my back.

As long as Danny is among them, I know it’ll go our way.

Danny won’t allow for any other outcome.

Chapter Six

Rae

November 27th…

It took time to assemble the men and women Shivers and Danny felt were needed, then more to come up with the plan.

In the day since, we’ve gone over it so many times I can recite it word for word as if it was my favorite episode of Friends.

Another leak would be placed, this announcing that the police believed I wasn’t it any danger and were withdrawing their protection. Even knowing it was coming, hearing it shook me and had me questioning my resolve to do this.

I wasn’t the only one either.

My parents were ticked. Finn threatened to go to the station and give them a piece of his mind. I calmed him down by being me, reminding him he couldn’t afford to lose it.

When he’d realized I wasn’t upset, he and our parents paused, their gazes locked on me through our three party video call. Searching. Danny had chosen that moment to come home, hollering out “Sunshine?” as I wasn’t in the kitchen finishing a new session for my channel. I’d taken to completing them, editing and all, right before he got home, allowing me the entire evening with him without my work interfering.

His still did, a fact of life for a cop, but I understood why.

“I knew it!” Mom shouted. “Didn’t I tell you Clark?”

“How?” I’d asked in shock.

Smug in her brilliance, she states, “I know my daughter. You glow when you talk about him.”

“That’s why I call her Sunshine,” Danny interjects, shoving his head in to be seen. I’d introduced them all then, using the sign names for each to get Danny familiar with them and vice versa. The three of them had hit it off, my brother choosing to withhold his judgment until I was no longer in danger.

His stare aimed my way assured me that he and I would be discussing it later, though.

Goody.

Finn could say whatever he wanted. It wouldn’t change my mind. It, and my heart, were set on Danny.

I’d assumed I’d be sent to my house again, letting the killer believe I was alone, unguarded, but Danny had informed me they needed a public place to do this.

A location that would give the cops a way to blend in while protecting me.

Apparently, I’d stopped watching the segment before the broadcasters had talked amongst themselves, chitchatting to fill some time prior to commercial. They’d discussed that I was returning to the scene of the crime, literally, by going to the same restaurant as that night.

Claiming that the owner was upset that a bad blind date at their business led to me witnessing something so horrible.

That was news to me, but Danny had confirmed that they’d reached out to the man and gotten his approval to play along with the story.
