“How much?” Again, not relevant, but a person lost his life for it. I’m curious as to what it was worth to this piece of crap.

“Three hundred.”

That breaks my heart. Danny clears his throat, getting my attention. Our eyes meet and he waits a beat, then glances at the floor. Hoping I’m interpreting that correctly, I go lax, and the sudden and unexpected addition of my body weight has him instinctively trying to catch me.

His literal human shield.

He fails and Danny now has an unobstructed view, which he takes advantage of, shooting the guy in the shoulder.

I get to my feet, not in the least offended Danny doesn’t assist me, knowing he hates it more than I do, but he has to keep his weapon trained on the known killer.

Nelson, identifying himself with not only the tap on the nose, but also Danny telling me who he is, hurries forward and handcuffs him. He even adds sympathetic, though I don’t buy them, noises as my attempted kidnapper demands medical treatment.

“I’m suing you,” he glares at Danny. “You, too,” he says to me. “You’re his accomplice.”

“And you’re an idiot that’s going to jail,” Nelson mutters, urging him toward the back exit, mindful of his injury despite his earlier mocking. “Yeah, yeah, the hospital will be first.”

Epilogue One

Danny

January...

Reginald Devney was convicted of murder and attempted kidnapping. Tacked on was a lot of other charges, with more coming as they’re discovered by tearing about his life and finding other crimes, he will not be a free man anytime soon.

A good guy, he is not.

I hate that, in a way, I owe him for bringing Rae to me.

She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

As her case was wrapping up, I’d shared with Shivers that I was in love with her and intended to ask her to marry me. Before he could ask, I reassured him that I’d followed all the rules during the investigation and had Nelson handle the arrest. That his name, not mine, was on all the official paperwork as the lead detective, ensuring should any questions arise, we could honestly show evidence to support our work. He’d shaken my hand, congratulated me, then proceeded to let me know I was lucky he wasn’t going to reprimand me for blurring the lines.

Rae had implied that she’d return to her own place, now that it was safe. Despite her words, though, I could tell she didn’t want to.

Which is when I promptly asked her to move in with me, giving her the key I’d already had made for her. She’d laughed and instantly accepted.

We’d then celebrated taking that next step, delaying my plan to begin bringing her stuff to our home.

Instead, it had been pushed to the next day, her brother even offering to help.

Unfortunately, Finn’s manner of helping was coming over and trying to pack the belongings that had accumulated at my place to return them to hers.

I was not amused.

He thought he was hilarious and loves to tell that story.

Her dad and mom have given me the seal of approval. My parents have already claimed Rae as theirs. The two moms have bonded, showing me and Rae how easily our families will mesh as our relationship progresses.

She’s returned to uploading videos consistently, her followers commenting on how happy she looks. When I’d offered to make a cameo so she could tell them why, she was thrilled.

And thanked me for it after.

I know she’s already given me a sign name, and I cherish it as I do my Sunshine. But, eventually, I want to use a different one. Telling her ahead of time will be unnecessary as she’ll understand as soon as I do it.

My dominant hand will be at my forehead, the other at chest level, palm out. The higher then drops, cupping the lower.

Husband.
