She could appreciate the fact he let her handle it and didn’t feel the need to step in and do it.

“Aside from her being the town gossip, you heard her. She gave me the incorrect details of today’s events. Then she bragged that she knew your parents and your siblings while she insulted you at the same time. She does that all the time when she comes in here. Always negative about people.”

“Guess she doesn’t know us as well as she thinks,” he said. “Or anyone for that matter.”

“Exactly. That is why I laughed when I introduced you. And I’m sorry she said what she had about your parents.”

“Nothing I haven’t heard before. Maybe if I hadn’t had the day I had I might have said something back to her. But you know, I already did something today that had me doubting my actions and worrying about disciplinary action. People like her just aren’t worth it.”

“Yes. Serves her right to be embarrassed too,” she said. “She is always coming over here and starting trouble. Saying mean things about people and if you call her out on it, she insults you.”

“Has she insulted you before?” he asked.

Ivy could tell he was getting ready to fight a battle for her. Awww, wasn’t that sweet. He was angrier now than when his parents were insulted.

“She tells me I’m always too sensitive. I’ve overheard her tell people before that I’m young yet and don’t understand things. She doesn’t know me enough to say that. I mean if my sisters want to say that about me, that is fine. They know me, but she doesn’t.”

“Your sisters wouldn’t say that to her,” he said.

“No, they wouldn’t. She thinks she knows everyone so well.”

“You know,” he said, “I don’t even think your sisters feel that way about you now.”

“They do,” she said. They got to the little kitchen up there. “There is water in here if you want one.” She reached in and grabbed two when he nodded his head and then she brought him to the conference room. “We’ve got more room to sit in here and eat and then I’ll show you my tiny office.”

“At least you’ve got your own office. I share one.”

He pulled the subs out and handed her the small. She opened it and pulled half out and took a bite. “This is great. I didn’t know how hungry I was. I’ve been so busy today.”

“I know something about being busy,” he said, smirking at her.

“I’m not sure I want to talk about it,” she said. “I mean you told me everything that happened. Was there anything else I should know?”

“No,” he said. “My superiors are reviewing the tapes and witness statements. I’ll be fine.”

“So there is a chance you could get in trouble?” she asked. She felt her eyes fill. “That doesn’t seem right when you arrested the guy.”

“Not in trouble like you think,” he said. “There are protocols and I didn’t break them or anything. At times you have to do what you can to secure a scene or a crime. I did that. But things could have or can go wrong and then there could be consequences. That didn’t happen this time.”

“But it could next time. I guess I don’t always think of your job that way.”

“Don’t,” he said. “I don’t want you worrying. I’m not sure I need that on my shoulders.”

She knew that. Her sisters had told her. She tried hard to not let Brooks see it.

“I’m trying,” she said quietly and continued to eat.

He didn’t say a word for about a solid minute.

“Shit. I get it,” he said. “My mother heard pretty fast and she called me in a panic. She’d heard about the rifle going off. I had to calm her.”

“And you don’t want to worry about calming me too,” she said. “I’m sorry if I was upset on the phone.”

He reached his hand over. “I understand. It comes with the job. I told you this. I know what I’m doing, but even being prepared anything can happen. I’m sure Heather knows that.”

“She does,” she said. She’d be talking to Heather the next time she saw her too.

“I can’t tell you how to feel and I shouldn’t do that.”
