“I do,” she said, lifting her hand and showing him. “I always have it on. I guess it’s a reminder.”
“You’ve always had beauty like a tiger. Now you’ve got the strength and independence of one too.”
Her bottom lip wobbled. “Thank you for that, Dad.”
“You’re welcome,” her father said. “I’m going to get some sleep.”
It was her father’s way of ending things. He said more than he ever had before and it was all the right things for once with the perfect timing.
Maybe in the end it was best to know she could count on him when she needed it.
Just like she learned today she could count on everyone when she needed them the most.

Her Grounds
“Thanks for fixing the leak.”
“Not a problem, Mom,” Brooks said a few days later.
“You didn’t have to take the day off for this,” his mother said. “It could have waited until tomorrow.”
“I’ve got time building up I’ve got to use anyway,” he said. Not that he liked taking the vacation days owed him when work was keeping him busy and keeping his mind off of Ivy.
Sitting home all day wasn’t helping him any.
The weekends were the worst.
It’d been almost three weeks now since he’d told her he wanted space.
She gave him what he wanted. Again.
He found it wasn’t what he wanted at all.
“How are things going?” his mother asked.
“Work is busy,” he said.
“Not with work,” his mother said. “With you.”
There was no reason to ask her to explain. River would have told his parents and his sister what an idiot he’d been with Ivy.
Seemed as if he’d been nothing but an idiot since he met Ivy.
“I’m fine,” he said.
He was putting his tools back in the bag. His father could have fixed this leak and he knew he was only called as an excuse to get him here to talk.
He could have put it off, but he was sick of being his own company.
“Doesn’t look it to me,” his mother said. “You look tired. Not sleeping well?”
“No,” he said.
Again, why lie or bother to deny something that was obviously being seen by those that knew him well?
“Do you want to talk about it?” his mother asked.
