“Said no one ever,” he said.

“You’re sweet to me. You show me a side of you that you never do to anyone else. Just like you said you see something in me my family never did. Don’t you think that makes us perfect for each other?”

Ivy still gave Brooks plenty of space. She didn’t text him a lot throughout the day. Not unless it was important. And she tried not to put pressure on him either.

But she also wanted to be herself and it seemed he wanted that from her too.

So saying the words “perfect for each other” didn’t seem to give him the urge to run.

“I guess that is one way to think we are good together,” he said.

He parked the truck and they both got out. It wasn’t quite dark enough yet for the fireworks. Probably another forty minutes before they’d see them. But they could get their ice cream and then go find a spot on the hill to watch the show over the water along with hundreds of other people.

She was tapping her chin and looking at the selection of flavors. “Can I get coffee ice cream with hot fudge, peanut butter and caramel sauce? Some chocolate sprinkles and whipped cream. No cherry.”

“Because the cherry would be overkill?” he asked.

“Yep,” she said, grinning. “Let me guess. Chocolate milkshake for you?”

“Guess you could say I’m predictable that way,” he said.

They got their sweet treats, returned to his truck and drove half a mile to where the fireworks could be seen better.

“This is a good spot,” she said. “Don’t you think?”

“Works for me,” he said. He put a blanket on the ground and they sat and ate.

“You’re being quiet,” she said while she made her way through her dessert. “Want to try some?”

“No,” he said.

“What’s wrong?” she asked. He seemed nervous for some reason. That wasn’t like him.

He shifted some and was looking at her. “Remember when I said I’d get on my knee for you?”

“And I told you you didn’t need to,” she said, scooping up more ice cream.

“Good,” he said. “I’d feel like a fool here, but I’d do it if you wanted me to.”

The spoon stopped moving to her mouth.

“What?”

He reached into his pocket and grabbed the sundae and spoon out of her hand and set it down. Then he looked in her eyes.

“I love you. I don’t have any other flowery words to say. Just that. And that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Just as simple as that. Will you marry me?”

Her jaw was still wide open, but she looked down and saw the ring slide onto her finger.

A band shaped like ivy and where it crisscrossed in the center there was a diamond solitaire. “Oh my God, you had Rose make my ring?”

“Is that a yes?” he asked.

She looked up at his face and realized he was nervous. “Yes!” she screamed and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“Thank God,” he said. “My heart nearly stopped.”

“Not as much as mine. I didn’t expect this. I mean I hoped that maybe in time we’d get here, but it’s only been like six months or so since we’ve been dating.”
