“Fine,” she said. “And I wouldn’t have given him my number or anything even though you know what I’m looking for and we agreed that might happen.”

“Why wouldn’t you?” he asked.

“Maybe I’m not done with an asshole that is blowing me off,” she said.

His heart rate jumped up several pulses with that. “Really?”

“Though I’m doubting that now.”

He reached out and uncrossed her arms. “I can’t promise you anything.”

“I don’t think I asked you to do that,” she said.

“No,” he said. “You didn’t.”

“But you know what? It might be nice to not have this be a secret for one. And for two, that I don’t have to wait for weeks and doubt myself either.”

“Maybe you aren’t the only one doubting yourself.”

She lifted an eyebrow about that. “Not sure why you are. But then I got thinking, you know more about me than I do about you.”

Which was how he liked things.

“Now what?” he asked. “I’m here with my family for dinner. Don’t suppose we can meet up later? Why are you here?”

“My work Christmas party,” she said. “I came with Dahlia.”

“Oh,” he said. “She’s probably wondering where you are.”

“Not sure. There are a lot of people there on the dance floor and talking, mingling. I got hot and needed some air, then was going to get a drink at the bar. I still need it.”

“Let me get you one,” he said.

“Someone might see you,” she said sarcastically. “If they aren’t wondering where the heck you are. My guess is the waitress would be getting your drinks, so hope you’ve got something to tell your family.”

He’d figure it out when he got there.

“Don’t worry about it,” he said. “Let’s go back to the bar.”

“Nope,” she said. “You go back with your family and I’m going to the bar and then back to my party. If you want to see me again, then you can reach out. Don’t worry about waiting or wondering who should do it right now. I’m putting it in your court. Deal with it.”

She turned and walked away from him. Strutting was more like it on her black pumps that had him drooling, to the skirt that was mid thigh and showing him some of her body that he remembered so vividly in his mind.

She was made up more than normal, not like she was out on the troll for some action but out for fun.

And it looked as if he ruined it on her.

He made his way back to his table trying not to feel as if his tail was between his legs.

“Everything okay?” his father asked him. Everyone was grinning.

“Yes,” he said. He picked his beer up and drained it. Their dinner plates had been cleared.

“We ordered your dessert,” Raine said. “If you don’t want it, I’ll eat it.”

“That’s fine,” he said.

“Are you going to tell us what is going on with that chick you just got into it with at the bar?” River asked him.
