He hated hearing shit like that, but he knew he couldn’t save the world.

He had a job to do and did it.

“That stinks,” she said. “But nothing you can do about it. Anyway, I probably won’t get home until close to seven thirty tonight.”

“I guess that works out,” he said. “I’ve got to finish this report and I could be here for a while. How about we go to dinner on Friday? It can be our Valentine’s Day?” he asked.

“We can do that,” she said. “And then we won’t have to deal with too many people either.”

He was glad she wasn’t having an issue with this. It reminded him of the conversation he’d just had with Luke. That maybe people didn’t know Ivy as well as they thought they did.

Or, he was the one that was wrong and she was putting up with his shit because she didn’t want to be alone.

Guess he should man up and find out the answer to that soon.

He looked up when there was a knock at his door. His captain. “I’ve got to run right now,” he said. He held his hand up.

“Okay,” she said. “Can I call you when I get home?”

“Yeah,” he said. “Talk to you then.” He hung up and said, “What can I help you with?”

“Nice work,” Captain Wilson said.

“Thanks,” he said. “I wasn’t sure we were ever going to catch them. For two dropouts without a plan they got away with a lot.”

“Because they had no plan and weren’t doing anything flashy or consistent. If you didn’t follow the lead about two people walking down the street that one night and then continue to keep reaching out to residents in the areas of the robberies to try to find the car, we might still be wondering who they were.”

“It was a lot of phone calls and videos that many didn’t have.”

Brooks didn’t even want to think of the hundreds of hours of time he put into tracking people down trying to see if they had cameras and if he could get their footage, then view it.

It paid out.

“It all works out in the end. I’ll let you finish up your report and get out of here. I hear you might have someone special to go home to.”

He wasn’t sure how anyone knew he was dating Ivy. He didn’t talk about his private life much. He was positive Luke wouldn’t have said a word either.

“She’s working tonight,” he said.

Captain Wilson nodded his head and left.

He got back to work and would try to figure out something nice to do for Ivy on Friday to make up for being a shitty boyfriend.

Shit...did he just refer to himself as a boyfriend?

How the hell did that happen?

Doubting His Actions

Two weeks later, Brooks walked into the bank around nine thirty. He’d been out following up on a lead and decided to get some cash, as he was low on it.

It was his rotten luck the ATM was out of service and he had to go inside.

There was part of him that just was going to drive away and come back another time, but he knew damn well if he didn’t do it now, it’d be weeks before he thought of it again.

Since it didn’t seem as if there were that many cars in the parking lot, he figured he’d be in and out fast enough.
