“No.”

“Heal. Me,” he repeats, digging a little deeper as a knock sounds on the front door.

“I can’t,” I admit when it’s clear he’s not interested in whoever is on the other side.

“Why?” I shake my head, but he presses harder and blood droplets trickle down his arm.

Fuck.

“Because I can’t, okay? I’m a fucking Void.”

The knocking at the door becomes incessant as I remain frozen in place, panting with every shallow breath I take. Brax stares at me, but there’s no surprise in his eyes and Creed, Eldon, and Zane all watch me just as intently as the silence continues to extend around us.

Clearing my throat, I slowly reach for Brax’s hand and guide his pointed nail away from his flesh. His skin feels like stone against mine but I keep my mouth shut about it as I push to my feet. I can’t fucking breathe and the knocking is escalating the stress even further.

“I should answer that,” I mumble, heading for the door.

“No, you shouldn’t,” Eldon argues, and I turn to face him.

“What time is it?” His brows furrow at my question, but he still checks for me.

“Seven o’clock.”

Nodding, I swipe a hand down my blazer. “It’s Leila. We’re going to the party. She’s not going to stop knocking until I answer.” I turn for the door but don’t take a step as Brax’s voice washes over me.

“Do you seriously think you’re still going to the party after dropping a bomb like that on us?”

Rolling my shoulders back, I take a deep breath as my spine stiffens at the tone of his voice. I look back over my shoulder at him. “You are aware that I’m my own person, right? I can make my own decisions.” The scowl on his face makes it clear that he really couldn’t give a shit.

“Not when it comes to your safety, it seems.”

Shaking my head, I stride toward the door. I manage to grab the handle and open it an inch before it’s slammed shut again. The woodsy scent that envelops me confirms who it is. His front is pressed to my back and his arm is stretched out over my shoulder with his hand plastered against the door.

Fuck.

My brain is already messy. I don’t need to feel his body heat as well right now. I can’t think straight.

Eldon.

“We haven’t finished talking yet, Little Bird,” he breathes against my ear, and I have to force back a shiver.

Blowing a heavy breath past my lips, I keep my gaze fixed ahead as I answer him. “Today has been a fucking mess.”

“That’s putting it lightly,” Brax interrupts.

“Finally,” I holler, tilting my head around Eldon’s frame to lock eyes with him. “Something we can agree on.” Zane snickers, making me relax a little despite Eldon’s close proximity. “But seriously, I need to unwind before I self-combust. So I’m going to this party.”

“Are you forgetting the part where you just announced you’re a Void? You can’t go to a party where everyone else has magical abilities.” I turn to face Eldon and lift my palm to his chest. His eyes heat before me, but darken the second I knock him back a step.

“I didn’t just turn Void this second, Eldon. I’ve been Void since forever and I have been surrounded by magic every day. I can handle myself. Now, give me some space.” I turn with a huff, grabbing the door handle again. This time, I manage to open the door wide enough to see Leila. Her eyebrows are pinched in confusion and I try to offer her a reassuring smile before the door slams shut again.

I’m about to beat a man so hard.

Frustration simmers in my veins as I spin to stare Eldon down but, to my surprise, Zane is hovering closest to the door now. Sighing, I drop my face into my hands as I try to rally what little composure I have left.
