“Let me make you something.” Warwick grabbed the bags.

“I’m okay for the moment. That exertion did me in,” I said. That was the biggest understatement, but at least the pain I’d felt earlier when I’d been detained was gone.

“Come,” Warwick said with concern on his handsome face. He reached out to me and gestured at the bed. “Sit. Do you feel okay otherwise?” he asked, looking at my stomach. I felt a blush creep over my face. This was what I was afraid of. Now, I had to face all of this with a man I desperately wanted to be with and, at the same time, knew I could never be with.

“Yes,” I said. “But I felt a stab in my gut when Kevin grabbed me. It’s gone now.”

Warwick propped the pillows up for me, and I sat. I felt fine except for the exhaustion.

“Well, we have to get you checked by a doctor,” he said, grabbing his phone and dialing. “Kevin, book us an appointment at the clinic I visited. For today. I don’t care what it costs. Use her new name.”

Warwick listened for a minute and then said goodbye. “He’s going to book something for today.”

I nodded. I knew I had to do that soon anyway. I rubbed my belly thoughtfully. It was hard to believe there was a life growing inside me.

“Why didn’t you just tell me?” Warwick asked, his green eyes pleading.

“I was scared. And then you got so mad, and I knew we couldn’t be together anyway so I just didn’t see what good would come from telling you.”

Warwick looked pained. “But it’s mine. Did you think I’d not want to know?”

“Honestly,” I contemplated. “I thought you’d think I’d done it intentionally to get money or affection or whatever else some women do.”

“What? That’s insane. I’d never think that of you. Other women, maybe, but I know that’s not you.”

“And truthfully, the other reason is the idea of doing this with you but not WITH you is hard,” I admitted quietly.

Warwick nodded. “I know. And I’m sorry. But I will be here for the baby and you. I just don’t know how we can be together—unless we leave this continent for good.”

“I can’t do that. I want to repair things with my family. My mom, at least. How can I have a child and no family?” My voice cracked, and I put my face in my hands and sobbed. Warwick wrapped his arms around me and it made me cry even harder.

“As soon as I hear something about the families, I’ll let you know,” Warwick said.

“I know,” I hugged him back. “I was checking the news obsessively before I left the beach house, looking for anything. Hoping against hope that my family's names weren’t in it as victims of Pauly’s agenda. I haven’t looked in a couple of days now. There’s no news, is there?”

“No,” said Warwick firmly. “And I think you should stop checking the news. Focus on your health. No sense in causing yourself more stress. I promise as soon as I hear anything, I will let you know. I’ll make it safe for you to go home, but it may take a while,” he said. “If it’s the last thing I do, I promise I’ll make this right for you.”

A knock at the door startled us both. Kevin opened it a crack so we could hear him, “They’ll see her right away.”

Kevin drove Warwick and me to the clinic. The doctor on site was a friendly man with a kind smile. He checked me over from top to bottom, took blood, and confirmed what I already knew was true. I was pregnant.

“She felt a stabbing pain earlier when she was working out,” Warwick said, his voice grave.

“Is it gone now?” the doctor asked me.

I nodded. “Yeah, it was just one and then gone. I feel fine now. Hungry, but fine.”

“Well, I can do an ultrasound, but likely it was just muscular. But if you want, we can try and see something. It is unlikely to see much at this stage. Be careful on the heavy weights, but most exercise is fine until the final stages. As long as there’s no blood or anything abnormal.”

“Just do the ultrasound. Please,” Warwick said.

After we had thanked the doctor, Warwick asked one last question. “Is it safe to have sex after everything today?”

I smiled inwardly. I had just been thinking the same thing.

“Yes,” said the doctor and grinned. “Congratulations, you two, and I hope to see you again soon.”

“Thank you,” I said gratefully.
