I sent a text to the last number she’d called me from.

Mom, I’m coming home. It’s safe. Alex has called off the war I think.

She replied a few minutes later.

That’s what your dad is saying as well but he’s not sure if it’s true or not. I’m going home tomorrow either way. What about the kid’s dad? Is he with you?

No. We split up.

Oh. Well, for what it’s worth, you sounded happy when you spoke of him. But do what’s best for you. See you soon! Tell me the whole story in person.

I love you.

I love you too.

I breathed a sigh of relief and felt a pang of sadness simultaneously. I missed Warwick. My mother was right when it came to reading me. Was I overreacting by leaving the father of my child and the only man I’d ever loved? Yes, he lied to me but what was the reason? As far as I could tell from what I’d overheard it was because he loved me and didn’t want me to leave. Was that really a reason to leave? His note said that he wanted to talk to me when he got back from his run. Maybe he was going to tell me everything then. I almost turned back three times on my way to the bus station, but stubbornness and fear of what he’d say after I’d run away from him again kept me moving forward. What if he wanted to be with me and my leaving had changed his mind?

By the time I arrived at the station, it was dark out. All of the buses had departed for the evening, and I was alone in the empty terminal. I curled up on a bench and debated calling Warwick. What was I even doing here in the middle of the night? Had pregnancy and stress made me lose my mind?

Chapter Seventeen

Warwick

IvowedtotellSarah the truth as I jogged through the forest around the chalet. I knew she wanted to see her family and that I caused more pain by not telling her. I just wished I could see into the future. Would she want to stay with me and raise our kid together if she knew I helped her father get out of the crime side of the business? I had the perfect venture for him, but I needed a couple more days to sort out the details and bring it to him.

Just tell her the whole story and see what happens. I knew it was the right thing to do and by the time I got back to the chalet, I was excited at the prospect of conversing with Sarah. Maybe this was the start of a partnership with us? I’d never been fully honest with a partner before and this felt like growth for both of us. I knew Sarah wasn’t with me for my money or what I could get for her. She loved me and I loved her, and it was about time I started acting like that.

My excitement turned to confusion and then shock when I entered the chalet.

“Sarah?” I called and was greeted by silence.

Maybe she’s napping, I thought and padded up the staircase to the loft. I saw her note and felt my stomach drop before I’d even read it. She knew I’d lied to her. I dropped to the bed and felt the devastating sadness envelop me. I was too late. I should have been honest from the beginning and now I’d gone and ruined any chance I had of being with her.

“Kevin,” I said into the phone. “Did you see Sarah leave?”

“No,” he answered. “I was around back cleaning up the pool area.”

“Why weren’t you working?” I demanded.

“You told me to relax, remember?” His voice sounded angry and bewildered.

“Shit. Yeah. Sorry,” I said. “Sarah’s gone. She knows I was lying to her. She must have heard you and I talking.”

“Oh no! Wait for me, I’m coming in.”

Less than two minutes later, Kevin burst through the door. “Where did she go?” he asked.

“I don’t know.” I handed him the note.

“Well, if she heard us, then she knows it’s safe to go home,” Kevin said. “Does she have the disposable phone still?”

“I think so. She left all the clothes Maria got her, but I didn’t see the phone.”

Kevin picked up his phone and dialed. I could hear it ring three times before turning off.

“I’ll send a text,” I said, typing quickly.

Sarah, I know you’re mad at me but please listen. I was going to tell you after my run! I just wanted to work it out in my head before we spoke. I have an idea. I’m sorry! Please call me.
