“I might be interested in hearing more about that.” Frank looked like he wanted to say more, but a noise in the hallway stopped him short. We both turned as Sarah came back to the door. Her face was pale, and she looked sick.

“Okay, well, thanks, Warwick,” she said and reached for her backpack that I held. “You should go. It’s a long drive.”

Chapter Eighteen

Sarah

“Anthonyhassomethinghe’dlike to say to you,” my dad said. I felt a shiver of uncertainty take over my body. I desperately wanted Warwick to say anything that would take away the wedge between us and bring us back to where we were before.

“Yes? What?”

Warwick took a deep breath. “Sarah, listen, I know I should have told you about Alex as soon as I came in earlier. Or even the day before when I was sure it was still going to be okay, but the truth is that I was scared.”

“Scared of what?” I demanded.

“Scared that I was the only one who felt how I felt,” Warwick said.

“And how is that?” I asked.

My dad looked at Warwick encouragingly. His entire demeanor had changed since I’d returned from the washroom. I felt like the father I grew up with was back. He’d been so stressed the last few years about me and my mom and keeping us safe that seeing him smile, even a little, felt like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders.

“Sarah, I love you. At first, I just wanted to save you from a marriage you were trying to escape from. Then I realized how great of a person you are and how much we had in common. I love coming home to you, and I get excited to see you every single day,” Warwick paused and fumbled around in his jacket pocket. He drew in a deep breath.

“I know you have no reason to trust me, and I don’t blame you. It’s all my fault. But Sarah,” Warwick stopped and dropped to one knee. “I love you. And I want you to be with me. Will you marry me?”

I stared at him dumbfounded. Was he serious? This was everything I wanted and more.

Warwick’s deep eyes searched mine imploringly, and I realized I was keeping him waiting. He seemed to be holding his breath and praying.

“Yes, I will,” I said excitedly. “Yes!”

Warwick exhaled heavily and put the ring on my finger. “This was my grandmother’s ring. If you want another ring that’s just for you, maybe we can pick it together? You know, if you think this style is outdated or something…” He stopped and looked at me as if he knew he was rambling.

“I love it,” I said and admired the stones. “But what about Alex? And everything? I thought we agreed it was best if we separated.”

“Sarah!” My dad interjected. “The man clearly loves you. Do you always have to analyze everything?” His blue eyes twinkled, and he laughed to let me know he wasn’t serious.

“I know we have some obstacles, but with Pauly out of the picture, there is nothing we can’t overcome,” Warwick said.

“Alex is okay with this?” I asked. “I don’t want to put anyone at risk, especially our child.”

“He’s fine with it. He’s known you’ve been with me since you got on the back of my bike. He covered it up so Pauly wouldn’t find out,” Warwick replied.

“There’s a lot you haven’t told me.”

“I know,” he said, his voice serious. “And I intend to spend the rest of my life making sure that never happens again. From now on, no more secrets. I promise.”

I opened my arms and threw them around Warwick’s shoulders. His strong arms enveloped my small frame, and we held each other for what felt like an eternity. All of the fear left my body as his warmth penetrated me. It felt like I was meant to be here for the rest of my life.

Chapter Nineteen

Warwick

Itfeltlikeahuge weight that had been on me for my entire life was lifted when Sarah said yes. We held each other in bliss while Kevin walked to the door from the car and said hi to Frank.

“Why didn’t you come up sooner?” Frank asked. “Look at this guy, leaving you alone in the car!” They both laughed. “Let’s go in. I’ll set you up in the spare room while these two lovebirds sort out their lives.”

Frank and Kevin clapped each other on the back and went inside.
