Page 40 of What We Had

“Connor!” Bennett shouted, then grabbed my arm in both his hands.

I let out a joyful laugh and slung an arm around him. “Can we lie back? Is that all right?”

His answer came in the form of movement, dragging me to the blanket, where he snuggled inside the crook of my arm. I adjusted the blankets to gain more coverage and heat. Our eyes hit the skies. Dean Martin sang us a lullaby.

We stayed quiet for a few songs to enjoy each other and the atmosphere. I replayed a few choice memories of our summer down here. Chris, terrified of cold water. Vick, completely immune to it. I remembered the first time I took Bennett here, when it was only the two of us. Before we had done anything together. Static electricity kept us circling each other but never quite connecting, even after he made eyes at me that night in the back seat of Chris’s convertible.

Then, one night, it eventually happened. Just him and me and some oppressive July heat. The sun had mostly dropped below the horizon, with plenty of light to see each other. We dipped into the river to cool off. Splashed each other. Waded close. And the rest…

“Hey,” Bennett said over the sound of an Elvis song I didn’t recognize. “Remember the first time I kissed you?”

God, this man. I squeezed him tighter into me as if I could express in physical presence how we simply connected. “I was literally just thinking that. Kid you not.” I gave a breathy laugh. “I had a raging hard-on and couldn’t get out of the water for, like, twenty minutes.” Bennett let out an awful noise and fidgeted to get away, but I held on.

“You ruined a moment!” Bennett teased.

I pressed my lips to his temple. “I will ruin any moment if it means I can see you smile.” Then added, “And for the record,Ikissedyou.”

He buried his face into the meat of my pec. “Yeahyou did.” The way he said that. Blood rushed to all the right places. “You knew what you wanted.”

“I still do.”

“Will you kiss me like that again? Like it’s our first time?”

I adjusted and rolled so that we faced each other. I wanted to roll on top of him, but the last time we used that position ended in catastrophe. I put my hand on the back of his neck and drew him toward me. Didn’t wait for a sign. His eyes squeezed closed in anticipation, just like our first time. We had been splashing around, bodies rubbing against each other as we played in the water. I remembered the exact moment instinct moved me. Bennett had run his hands through his hair, sent up a fountain of water from his lips, then looked at me with that big smile I had already fallen for. I went right in. No slow movements. No hesitation.

I’m gonna kiss you, I remember thinking. And I did.

I did again under those blankets and the stars as the new make-out champs who stayed in that lane. Bennett let me kiss him for a good twenty minutes. He had me so spun up, a feather’s touch to my dick would see it burst. I could feel his hardness too when we moved in the right way. He didn’t shy away from me when we brushed against each other. I considered all of it a move in the right direction.

Temperatures dropped further as the evening wore on and we decided at the same time to call it a night. We held hands on our way back to the car. I dropped the bag into the trunk while Bennett hopped inside. When I made to sit in the driver’s seat, I realized he had been sitting in the back seat.

Looking at me. Withthoseeyes.

He patted the open spot beside him.

“Just like old times,” he said in the silence of the car.

I crawled into the back and sat on my hands. I had grown a few more inches since we last sat back there and my knees pressed into the front seats. Then Bennett surprised me. He crawled atop me, straddled me, and ducked low to avoid hitting the ceiling. He put his arms over my shoulder. Saw the shock in my wide eyes. I curled my fingers underneath me. This was going to be difficult to hold back.

“Kiss me again,” he said in a heady voice. “Like we used to. Before everything changed.” He reached down and dug my hands out from under me, then laid my hands on his hips. Leaning into my ear, he whispered, “Keep them there, okay?”

I nodded. The sensation of his lips against my ear made me go to full attention. He felt all of it, all of me, and didn’t flinch. Sexual instinct wanted me to manhandle his hips and grind him down while I lifted. Instead, I hooked my thumbs into the belt loops of his pants and focused on kissing him.

We kissed for another twenty minutes, neither of us switching positions. My hands stayed where they were while my tongue did all the expression. He met me with the same ferocity we had the night everything went awry. His tongue explored my mouth as if he needed to carve out new places just for him. Any modicum of movement from his ass against my dick had me spinning out of control. If we ever did this again, I wouldn’t last.

We naturally slowed down. Bennett had been breathing hard. The windows fogged completely over.

“Just like old times,” I repeated when we both noticed the steam inside the interior.

“I needed this,” Bennett said as he climbed off of me and slinked into the front seat. When I didn’t move, he looked back with a curious expression.

“Gonna need a minute,” I said. I extended my arms along the seatback and dropped my head back. Blew out a lungful of air. “Yeah, gonna need a minute to come down from the clouds.”

Bennett laughed and pressed a smug look of satisfaction on his face. “Guess I still got it.”

“In spades, Benny. In spades.”

“Hey, wasn’t this where I gave you your first blowjob?” Bennett asked in a light tone.
