“There’s one catch, though,” Compass called. “The past ten minutes or so needs to happen again, but in front of the cameras. You know they are going to want to see all of that mushy shit.”

Yarder shrugged. “The camera crew comes tomorrow; we keep a close eye on them while they are here, and then Aero pops the question in front of the cameras. You guys can work out the rest as long as it ends with you four on the road to Golden, Colorado, by nightfall.”

“What about my dad?” I called. We had all been focused on the club, as they should be, but even though my dad was the reason for all of this, he still needed a plan, too.

Dad held up his hands. “Don’t worry about me. I’m going back to Dallas and plan just to lay low with all the cases they threw at me. If I stay under the radar and keep my mouth shut, I should be fine.”

“You just said you know too much. Are you going to feign a case of amnesia or something?” I demanded. “You drive me crazy, and I can really only take talking to you on holidays, but I still love you, Dad. Stay here,” I offered.

“Whoa, whoa,” Yarder called.

Dad shook his head. “If I disappear, Dove, they will for sure come looking for me. It was risky for me to come here now. I’m going to go back to Dallas and act like everything is normal. I have a few contacts I can reach out to and try to find out more of what Gibbs and Boone are up to.”

“No,” I called. “Don’t go snooping around anymore, Dad. I thi–.”

“Your dad is a grown man, Dove,” Yarder interrupted. “If he thinks going back to Dallas is for the best, then that is what he should do.”

“I can hire some security, Dove, and nothing will happen,” Dad promised. He buttoned his suit and turned to Yarder.

Yard stood and talked quietly to Dad.

I shoved my chair back to stand, but Throttle’s hand gripped my shoulder.

“Stay,” Throttle commanded.

My eyes connected with his. “He shouldn’t be sent back to Dallas with no protection.”

“He just said he is going to hire security and act like everything is normal. That sounds like a solid plan to me. Your dad got us into this shit, and thankfully it sounds like he is going to try to help make it stop.”

Dad nodded at Yarder and headed out of the room.

“Let me go, Throttle,” I growled.

He stared at me for a second but released his hand.

I jumped out of my chair and chased after my dad.

He was at the front door when I called his name, and he turned on his heel. “I’m sorry, Dove. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen. I got too caught up in what I wanted and didn’t think about anyone else.”

“You’ve been doing that all of my life,” I spat. “You even did it when Mom was alive.”

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, Dove, and for the first time, I am going to do everything I can to fix them.”

“You don’t have to do this alone,” I pleaded. Hell, I don’t even think he knew what he was going to do. Going back to normal and snooping around didn’t seem very well thought out.

“Just stay with the Iron Fiends, Dove.”

“Dad,” I pleaded softly. I hated a lot of the things the man did, but he was still my dad at the end of the day. “Please be careful.”

He nodded and turned back to the door. “I’d tell you the same thing, Dove, but I know by the way that man sitting next to you looked at you, nothing will ever touch a hair on your head.” He opened the door and disappeared into the dark night.

His words rolled around in my head, and I tried to make sense of them. The way Throttle looked at me?

He always looked annoyed when I was around.

“Dove?” Sloane called. She moved next to me and grabbed my hand. “Are you okay?”

“Uh, well, that might have been the last time I saw my dad alive. He muttered something about the way Throttle looked at me, and my best friend just got engaged because we needed to distract a camera crew.” Other than that, yeah, I was okay.
