Destiny held the phone out and shook her head. “I think we’ve been made.”

“Meaning?” Montana frowned.

“The Dom doesn’t want to meet with me.”

“Shit. I think the heat is on. My guess is not a single Dom will be going out tonight and I bet you the club will be a ghost town.”

“You think Mr. Peterson talked?”

“I’d bet on it,” he huffed. “I need to call my partner. We’ll think of something else. I’ll be right back.”

“Yeah.” She sighed and finished her drink, deciding on another. Nothing was going right. She grabbed her glass and walked toward the back door. As she stepped out onto the deck, she heard the first sound of thunder in the distance. The predicted storm was rolling in. She tipped her head, studying the turbulent sky, and thought about Chris. Her attraction to him was completely different than what she felt for Montana. Both men were gorgeous, rugged, but Chris not only had a polished edge, he also had the perfect dangerous persona.

She licked the rim of her glass, remembering the look on Chris’ face after he’d whipped her. He was in his own ecstasy, but his eyes were so cold, a blackness covering his gorgeous blue eyes. The lure of the unknown regarding pain kept her on edge, longing for more. Maybe she was nothing more than a pain monger.

Gripping the railing, she moved back and forth remembering his words of control. A strange sensation settled over her as if he were watching. She scanned her yard, searching for him. Of course he wasn’t here, but his vibes, his desires and his thoughts remained, covering her like a velvet blanket. The bond they shared was powerful, enigmatic.

“I have to go.”

She turned and could see a troubled look on Montana’s face. “What’s wrong?”

“The meeting tonight is still cancelled?” Montana asked as he walked toward her.

“Yes. The guy had plans. What’s wrong?”

“A development in the case.”

“But you’re suspended.” Destiny was surprised more by the look in his eyes.

“Not any longer.”

She closed the distance. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“I can’t talk about the case. There is going to be a patrol car coming to sit on the street. They should be here in about twenty minutes. Stay inside. Lock the door. Do you understand me?”

“Now you’re frightening me,” Destiny whispered.

“No need. Everything is going to be over soon enough.” He took both of her arms. “I want you safe. I’ll be back as soon as I can. Okay?”

“Montana, just talk to me.”

He shook his head. “I can’t, but I will later.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

Montana took a step back then took her hand, kissing her palm.

“If you keep doing that, I might not allow you to leave.”

He gathered her into his arms, lowering his head and kissing her lips.

Destiny shivered and as soon as he pulled away he walked back into the house. The kiss was different, full of sadness. What the hell was going on? By the time she walked back inside, he’d already left. She padded to the front door and engaged the deadbolt. A sense of dread and fear furrowed into every cell. Why hadn’t he told her what was going on?

She peered out the window. The street was busy with activity. Montana drove away from the parking spot and for some reason she wanted to beg him not to go. Sighing, she glanced around at the darkened hallway. Tonight the shadows were comforting.

After refilling her glass, she walked toward the living room but was unable to sit. She was nervous, unsure of where everything was leading. She left the lights off, comforted by the darkness. Could she have a relationship with Montana that included aspects of D/s? He seemed interested, but she wasn’t certain he could maintain. Groaning, she resisted gulping her drink. Being in a haze wasn’t going to solve anything. She leaned against the window and stood quietly for several minutes.

Car lights appeared, pulling into the same spot that Montana had vacated. A rush of glee shocked the hell out of her. Montana, her protector and the man who certainly gave a damn about all aspects of her life. She jogged toward the door, twisting the knob.
