“I think you do. Time. You require an experienced teacher. I believe my client is the perfect choice. He’s nurturing yet demanding. Controlled. He’s one of the best at what he does. He’s well versed in the art and I dare say, handsome.”

“I would like that.” The words slipped from her mouth before she could stop them. A buzzing noise rung in her ears. She was quivering, but this time from exhilaration. Could she learn to succumb? Would she be able to be a submissive?

“Very well. I will offer you a place in my house if you’d consider coming to work for me.”

The offer was nonchalant, as if she was merely considering switching job titles.

“We can certainly work out payment terms. I will also suggest some articles and books you can read to truly understand.” Mistress Jade moved away.

“I… I don’t think so. I have a professional life, one that requires me to be-”

“Free and clear of a second life?” Mistress Jade chuckled as she interrupted. “I assure you that the women who work for me are all true professionals. I employ doctors and lawyers, accountants and schoolteachers. As I mentioned, discretion is vital to my organization, so we make stringent efforts to maintain a rigid protocol.” Mistress Jade moved to within six inches. “I realize your name isn’t Skyler and in truth, I don’t need to know who you really are unless you agree to work with me. I do, after all, perform background checks on my employees as well as my clients. We are a very special breed.”

“Special breed? Men who enjoy being sadists and the women who are pain mongers?”

Mistress Jade narrowed her eyes. “Tell me more details about your dreams, the ones you have every night. Have you had a relationship that fulfilled you in the last few years or maybe your entire life? Do you long to be controlled, cared for and loved by a man who will shower you with affection for your complete servitude?”

She swallowed hard and blinked several times, trying to hold back tears. “I… I have little time for love in my life.”

Bursting into laughter, Mistress Jade shook her head and cupped Destiny’s jaw. “I assure you, love does exist in the world of D/s, but I’ve never had a client fall in love with one of my employees. You forget that the majority are married men with very important lives. Complications they can’t afford.”

“Then I’d simply be a play toy.”

Mistress Jade inhaled and rubbed her thumb across Destiny’s mouth. “Yes. Now I think you comprehend. You would not only have hours, perhaps days of what you’ve been craving your entire life, but you’d also make very good money. Is this something you’d like to consider?”

Mine… All mine…

His words lingered, swirling in her mind. Destiny was lightheaded, her pulse rapid. She was no longer the psychiatrist searching for the killer of two of her patients. She was now a longing submissive. “I need to give this some thought.”

Stepping back, Mistress Jade nodded as she took a business card from the holder on her desk. “I’ll give you my personal cell phone number. Please take a day or so to think over my offer, but no longer. My clients aren’t patient men.”

“I can appreciate.” Of course, she would just be another in a collection.

“I hope you do. If you decide against my offer, then you are no longer welcome in my establishment and you will tell no one of our location or this meeting. Is that clear?”

She remained afraid but there was an air of truthfulness in what Mistress Jade was saying. She didn’t believe the woman had any knowledge of the murders committed, at least not any details. “Crystal. Thank you and I’ll let you know.”

Destiny couldn’t get out of her office or the house fast enough. One of the staff was waiting at the bottom of the stairs with her coat. She grabbed it, shoving the cloak under her arm as she headed for the door. She had a firm grip on the card and only when she was outside was she able to breathe a sigh of relief. This wasn’t what she’d expected in the least.

CHAPTER 10

Montana drove his vehicle slowly through the neighborhood, peering at the exclusive houses with a mixture of awe and disdain. The community was filled with expensive homes, some enclosed by massive iron gates. Even in the darkness he could appreciate the incredible landscaping. The streets were tree-lined, sidewalks encasing both sides. The streetlights only illuminated a small perimeter surrounding the tall poles and the slender strip of moon did little to help his progression.

He’d left Grant at the scene of the other crime. They hadn’t been able to make a connection with the bouncer’s death and that of the latest BDSM victim, but his instinct told him the murderer was one in the same. He hadn’t planned on coming to visit the Mistress, but he had to try and make some tether in order to advance the case. The monster was toying with them. No, the asshole was beating him in particular. This was personal. Time for Ms. Devereaux to come clean.

He studied the GPS on his phone and made a right turn. He slowed to a crawl and gripped the steering wheel as he squinted. “It’s freaking dark out here.” The thought a BDSM club could be housed in an exclusive mansion was fascinating, even though he had no doubt there were basements full of whips and chains throughout Richmond. He’d seen almost everything during his tenure, but private kink clubs for the rich and famous nestled in a multi-million-dollar estate was a new twist. She would be angry at his arrival at her club, instead of the office she touted as a vanilla business, but at this point he had few choices.

Another two blocks and he grew positive he was getting close. After rounding a corner, he noticed a woman walking down the sidewalk, her steps quick and purposeful. He read the numbers on the houses and surmised she’d come from Club Noir. He decided to pass her and find a parking spot down the street. A quick glance and his blood ran cold. Destiny Blade. He was certain. “Fuck!” What in God’s name did she think she was doing? Coincidences he didn’t believe in. She was investigating all on her own.

Slapping his hand on the steering wheel, he found a place to turn around and by the time he made it back to the spot where he’d seen her, the driver was already engaged, making a quick U-turn in the street and heading out of the community. He decided to follow her. The woman might not be Destiny, but if so, he needed to ascertain if the woman was out of her mind. If she’d gone to the club, then she’d been lying to him.

He kept a safe distance as she drove out onto Cary Street. For a few seconds he thought the driver might turn onto the Interstate, heading for a different location, but when the car kept going in the direction of the Fan, he knew he was right. “What are you doing, little lady?” She was way out of her league.

Montana followed her all the way to the street in which she lived, almost losing her at a traffic light. She found a parking spot only two blocks from her house. He secured one four cars ahead. Checking his rear-view mirror, he waited until she was out of her vehicle and almost a block away before he climbed out of the car.

She kept her steps quick and determined, as if afraid of being discovered. He didn’t allow her to enter her home before confronting her.

“What were you doing at Club Noir?”
