Nodding, he rubbed his eyes. “If you think of anything, let me know.”

When a shadow crossed his face, she crossed her arms. “What is it?”

“Tell me about Boston.”

Taken aback, she glared at him. “You’re investigating me now? How dare you!”

“I can take nothing for granted, Destiny. Several of the murdered victims were under your care. I make it my business to find out everything I can.”

Rattled, she looked away. “There’s nothing to tell. I cared about a man I’d been treating. The word here is cared about. He was no longer my patient when we started dating. The hospital didn’t like my answers. I think they used the excuse, but I couldn’t prove anything. I just did the best I could to sweep the information under the rug. There’s nothing sordid about the details.”

“Okay. Fair enough.”

“Good,” she stated and looked away. She wanted to be furious but he was right to search her records. Still, her life had been a mess then and she’d lost more than one friend given her decisions.

“Something will give at some point.”

Suddenly a coy look crossed her face. “What if I worked with you?”

“In what way?”

“I’m already a submissive in the upper echelon. What if I continued accepting dates?” She could tell instantly the thought wasn’t foreign to him, even though his expression was pinched. “Think about it. I’m the only logical person, besides, I’m being sought after.”

“By this guy you mentioned?”

When she hesitated his face turned red. “No. I…”

“As I guessed. Tonight. The date you were on?”

She nodded.

Montana slapped his hand on the table. “That’s it. No more. We can’t risk your life.”

“Are you going to tell me that you weren’t thinking the same thing? I saw it in your eyes. You know this is something that has to happen.”

“We have police women to go undercover,” he said quietly and looked down.

“Right. And you don’t think they can smell a cop? Come on.” She crawled closer toward him on the couch. “I can do this. I know what I’m getting into. I already have an in. You can be right there, outside in a car, gun in your hand.”

“Yeah, I thought about the idea, but no. Undercover work is too dangerous and out of the question, let alone police policies.” He gulped the rest of his wine.

She casually poured him a second glass and topped hers off. “What other choice do you have, waiting for him to kill again?”

He jerked up from the chair and paced the floor. “Good old fashioned police work and not with civilians.”

“At least let me go back to the club and see if I can find out anything.”

“Destiny, you’re not doing this and if you try…” His words trailed off.

“You know I’m right.”

“Whatever I was thinking was ridiculous. Never.”

She rose to her feet and walked toward him. “Just a couple of times. That’s it. If nothing happens then we abandon. I want to help. They were my patients. I feel responsible for what happened to them. Don’t you understand that at all?”

“I understand you have what appears to be a death wish. Not on my watch.”

Destiny wrapped her hand around his arm. She tingled from their touch. Exhaling, she shivered and for a few seconds was lost in a fog. What was happening between them? “Montana.”
