"I hear things. The man was so determined to get to the top that he mowed down everyone who happened to be in his way."

"That's business."

"Not the type I approve of. He’s money hungry."

"He came from nothing. I admire the fact he’s made something of himself."

"What do you know, darling?" He‘d asked her with an indulgent smile.

Finishing her coffee, she put the cup and her plate into the sink and went to find him. The morning was crisp and the air clean. The sun was just coming up over the trees and the leaves were bathed with an orange glow. There was also a brisk breeze that reminded her that she’d come outside without a jacket.

She’d walked for almost a mile before she saw him standing at the edge of a stream. He looked so solitary and alone, hands shoved into the pockets of his sweatpants, broad shoulders hunched slightly. She felt the ache inside her chest as she stared at him.

She must have stepped on some dried leaves, because his head lifted and turned to watch her approaching.

"I wanted to be alone."

"Too bad." She made her way toward him and slipped a hand through his arm. "It's lovely and fresh out here."

"You should have grabbed a jacket."

"Finding you was more important" Turning her head, she looked at him. "I should have turned off my phone."

"He‘s your old man It’s my fault I’m so insecure when it comes to you." He growled.

"I don't understand why you would be." She told him quietly.

"Because I get to spend so little time with you, I’m selfish as hell when it comes to the time we have together. I want it to be just us."

She turned in his arms and forced him to look at her. "I love you. I want you to know that above anything else, I am in love with you."

One hand lifted to tuck the tendrils of hairs behind her ear. "I know that. And it should be enough."

Chapter 4

She insisted on cooking dinner. They’d strolled hand in hand back to the cabin and he’d made love to her by the fire in the tiny living room. Now, she was making shrimp salad for supper.

They were both aware there was one day left and then they’d be going back to the real world. He had his company to run and his duties as CEO required that he do a lot of traveling. Before he met her, it’d been a thrill for him, and would have continued to be if she was free to accompany him.

Over the years, he’d invested in some prime real estate. There was the vineyard in Tuscany that was now producing really good wine, the flat in the UK where he usually stayed whenever he was there, the villa in Italy, the apartment in Manhattan, and a speed boat he’d take out whenever he wanted to chill.

He wanted her with him, that had never been the case before.

Seeing her here, away from the luxurious surroundings they were both part of, was relaxing. The pressure was off and he could be himself with her. He loved her active mind and often bounced things off her to get her opinion.

"You provide security for heads of government."

"Yep."

"I never knew how much people needed bodyguards until I met you." She watched as he worked the cork out of the bottle.

"Security details."

She rolled her eyes at him and made him want to kiss her. "Whatever. I’m surprised you don't need one yourself."

"I can fight and fight dirty."

"Still. You’re a very important man."
