“He already called and left a number where he could be reached.”

“Excellent. I’m on my way.” He touched the off switch on his steering wheel and concentrated on the flow of traffic. He couldn’t allow his mind to drift to the weekend.

That was behind him and missing her was going to have to be filed away to the back of his mind. It didn’t matter that he felt as if a hole was in his chest. It wasn’t like they’d said goodbye to each other. Then why the hell did it feel like it?

Chapter 6

She went through the day like she was in a daze. Her Dad had already left for the office by the time she got there and she called him as soon as she arrived.

“I was hoping you would be back by breakfast.”

“Traffic.” She told him briefly as she stepped out of her shoes and rushed to get dressed to make her appointment.

“How was your visit? I hope you had a nice time. You deserve the break from your old man.”

“As if I need a break from you.” She murmured lightly, feeling the pressure of the lies pressing against her chest. Living a double life was taking its toll.

“I was hoping you were spending the time with a nice young man.”

She closed her eyes and sat on the edge of the bed. “In time.”

“Okay, honey. I’ll see you for dinner.”

She’d called Maxwell right after trying to reassure herself that he was still with her.

“I’m rushing into a meeting. What’s up?”

“I-I just wanted to know if you made it in on time.”

“I know we’ve not been together for very long, but I happen to be very intuitive and I know you. What’s wrong, Alessia?”

She felt like weeping. “I miss you. It’s fine. It’s just- “

“I feel the same way.” His voice softened. “We’ll get through this. I have to go, darling; I’m running late. Talk later?”

“If you’re not too busy- “

“Stop. I’ll talk to you later.”

She hung up and wished he’d told her he loved her. It would have made her feel more secure. Shaking off the feeling, she busied herself getting ready to go out.

Soon, she arrived at the restaurant where the meeting was being held.

“Darling!” Melanie Winthrop gushed, gliding over to kiss cheeks. “It seems as if we’re the first to arrive.” She waved a hand at the eager staff, who came over to their table.

“I’m having a sparkling water with a twist of lemon. And for you?” The older woman looked at Alessia.

“The same, Bernard, thanks.” She smiled at the portly man who hurried off to fill their orders.

“It’s commendable how you know the names of the servers.”

“They’re people too.” Reaching for the bowl of mixed nuts, she filled her palm and started munching. She wasn’t feeling hungry even though the only thing she’d had was a cup of black coffee.

“Darling, are you okay?” Melanie stared at her with curious light blue eyes.

“Just a little tired.”

“I didn’t see you at the Given’s soiree. It was quite a to-do. The mayor was there as well as a few celebrities. You missed a great party.”
