Smiling widely, she put off her troubles and went about seeing where she was needed.

“What the hell is this?”

Joshua blanched visibly as he stared at the device rather than the very irritable looking man behind the desk.

“It’s an article- “His voice petered off at the cold look shot at him from lethal hazel eyes.

“I mean it’s – ah, the PR team are on it.”

“What the hell does this mean? How did they get hold of sensitive information?”

Joseph forced himself not to squirm or show how much he was wishing he was anywhere else. “The files were leaked- “

“I know the how of it, what I damn well need is the why.”

Taking a deep breath, Joseph looked at his device as if it was going to magically give him an answer.

“It says here the senator’s security system has been greatly compromised and the company has something to do with it. They’re alluding to the fact there’s a leak in the department and we’re not as stable as we’re supposed to be.” Maxwell read the rest of the article and felt his anger rising.

“Get the lawyers on the phone.”

“They’re already on their way.”

“We need to plug the leak.” His personal phone rang and he ignored it.

“The PR department- “

“Will send me what they have come up with and I’ll decide what goes out.” His phone rang again and he picked it up impatiently. “This better be a damn emergency.”

He listened for a minute, his frown deepening. “Where?”

Hanging up the phone, he pushed the away the newspaper and stared at Joseph. “There’s a family member at the hospital and I need to go and sort things out.” Pushing back the chair, he rose.

“Would you like me to call the driver?” Joshua rose to his feet.

“No. I’ll drive myself. Tell Calvin to call me as soon as he gets here. I’m going to need to speak to him as soon as possible.”

“Yes, sir.”

“I probably won’t be back for the rest of the day. Redirect the urgent phone calls to my number.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Stop sir-ing me to death.” Maxwell snapped as he grabbed his suit jacket and rolled down his sleeves.

“Yes si- I mean Maxwell. Sir I- “Biting off a sigh, Joshua handed him his briefcase.

Striding from the office, Maxwell made his way into the private elevator to the underground parking garage. The security rushed to meet him with the keys. Sliding behind the wheel, he sat there for a minute, drumming his fingers on the wheel. It wasn’t public knowledge that his mother’s sister was still alive, or rather her twin.

Hilda had firmly insisted on keeping it that way. The woman had been estranged from her sister for years after she’d taken up with ‘That good for nothing piece of crap’ as she put it. “I know he’s your father- “

“He was just the man who planted the seed, nothing more.” Maxwell had told her tightly. “It begs the question of where the hell have you been?”

“Hiding from my mistake.” She’d explained the details of how she’d gone into hiding as she ran for her life. “I’m not here to ask for handouts- “

“Good, because that’s not going to happen.”
