"I had her story checked out, and she was telling the truth." He noted with relief she had almost finished the bowl of soup. "I bought her a house. She has a little dementia and sometimes gets confused. I hired someone to stay with her to make sure she’s okay." He scraped the bowl and brought the spoon to her lips.

"She stays in the background because she doesn’t want the publicity and I agreed to it." Picking up the napkin, he patted her lips. "I’d like you to meet her. It might be best if she came here."

"Or we could go to her." She suggested.

"Or we could do that." He rubbed her back in a soothing manner that had her leaning against him. "As soon as you can travel."

"How far away is she?"

"Several miles. Better?"

She nodded. "You’re treating me like a baby."

"It just so happens that you are my baby."

"A baby carrying a baby? That's weird."

His chuckle warmed her heart and settled her. "That might be the case, but you are. I was thinking we could get married in August."

"A little more than a month away."

"It’ll give you time to recover and for the wedding planner to do her thing. You’re not lifting a finger."

"I wasn’t going to. Except choosing my dress."

"Good." Rising with her in his arms, he headed for the door.

"I can walk."

"Why walk when you have someone to carry you?" He chided.

"The maids-"

"Will have to get used to seeing us like this." He bounded up the stairs effortlessly. "Left, or right?"

"Right and the first door-"

"I figured it would be." Nudging it open with his shoulder, he stepped into her bedroom.

"It's too feminine. I know you’re not going to like staying here-"

"It's only temporary." He settled her on the queen-sized bed with the mounds of pillows. "Should I lock the door?"

"No one comes in."

"Why don't I do so as a precaution?" Without waiting for an answer, he turned the lock before coming back. "Nightgown?"

She shook her head. "I’m wearing a tank top and panties.” Sitting up, she pulled the dress over her head. “I’m still very thin-"

"Hush." He told her huskily as he took his shirt and pants off. "You’ll always be beautiful to me." He pulled the sheets over them and turned on his side to look at her. "Think you’ll be able to sleep?"

"No."

"You already slept enough?"

"It's not that." She touched his chest. "Why don't you take this shirt off?"

His eyes narrowed at her. "I think it should stay on."
