His climax was long and incredibly sweet, draining every bit of his strength, leaving him drained. Her legs fell away weakly, her hands still holding him tight around the neck.

Lifting his head, he pressed a rough kiss on her lips before rolling away. Stacking his hands behind his head, he stared up at the plain crisscross of the boards and slats making up the ceiling. His body was flushed from the lovemaking, and his heart was still pounding.

“How was the trip?” Her soft voice had him turning his head to look at her. Her lips were swollen and her hair tumbling around her face. She looked like a sex siren.

“Still some loose ends to tie up.” Releasing one hand, he tugged at a fat curl. She used the opportunity to settle against him, her hands stacked on his chest to support her chin. “I read about the tremendous support you and the others garnered for the disabled veterans. Good job.”

She nodded. “It was quite a splash and the awareness brought national attention to what the men and women who fought for our great country is living with. I met several of them in the various half-way homes, assisted living and nursing homes and it’s heartbreaking.

There’s a guy in his early sixties suffering from acute mental breakdown and serious paranoia. He believes he’s still at war and people are out to get him.”

“Isn’t he medicated?”

“Over-medicated as far as I can tell. I’m not a doctor but he seemed drugged out of his mind.” She sighed. “On top of that, he doesn’t have any family who care enough to visit him."

"I’m sure you have every intention of rectifying that." There was amusement in his deep voice, as well as admiration.

She was a terrier when it comes to righting wrongs. At first, he’d dismissed her devotion and commitment to charity and had sneered and turned his nose up at the fact that she didn’t have a real job. He had slowly come to realize that they were doing important work and making a hell of a difference.

She genuinely cared about people and that was something to be said about a woman in her position. She could’ve chosen to try and spend as much as her Daddy's money as possible, but she’d taken the high road.

"I’ve already gotten in touch with his son." She shook her head. "He didn’t want to talk about the family dynamics at first, but I managed to get him to open up."

"You’re good at that." He murmured.

"I am." She agreed. "He was in the Airforce and his Dad was in the Army. It turned out that they had a disagreement years ago and it was allowed to fester. You know how a father and son can be.”

“No. I don’t. I never had that privilege or cross to bear.” There was a cynical touch to his sensuous lips.

“Maxwell, I’m sorry."

"Why?" His dark brows winged up. "I am the better for it. The worthless bastard didn’t want to be saddled with a wife and kid and took the easy way out. I think he did the best thing for us."

"I disagree."

"That's because you’re Daddy's princess."

She bristled at his tone. "There’s nothing is wrong with that."

"Except that he has a tight hold on you, and gets to dictate who you’re involved with."

"You’re being a jerk." She could feel her insides quivering.

"That's exactly who I am. Who knows?" He lifted one shoulder in a shrug. "The old man might be onto something. Maybe I’m not good enough for you."

"Now you’re just pissing me off."

"Such language." He tutted. "And from those sexy, classy lips of yours."

"I hate when you behave like this." She started to push up and away from him, but he kept her there by clamping a hand around her waist. "Let go of me."

"You’re pissed that I’m being honest?" His hazel eyes glowed with anger. "Tell me I’m wrong. We can’t be seen in public because your old man would hit the roof. He’s never going to accept me, is he?"

"Max-"

"My hands aren’t soft enough, my pedigree, hell, I have none. I’m not one of those spineless trust-fund idiots who simper around and sip tea and drink champagne. I worked my ass off to get where I am. The money wasn’t left for me to inherit, I made my own way and for that I’m being punished. I-"

"Stop it!" She whispered tearfully. "I love you."
