“You’re still not texting him.”

“Alright! I’ll text him. I just need to figure out what to say.”

“‘Hi?’ ‘Hello?’ ‘Why haven’t you texted me all week you inconsiderate asshole?’ Those are all good options.”

I stared at Cory surprised. “You should not be more upset about this than I am.”

“It just that you said things happened between you two last weekend and then he ghosted you. That’s bullshit!”

“First of all, he didn’t ghost me. At least, I don’t think he did. And, second of all, he’s got stuff going on.”

“You’ve got stuff going on. Hasn’t he thought about that? You deserve to be happy too, ya know.”

As grateful as I was for Cory’s righteous anger, I had to wonder where it was coming from.

“Is everything alright, Cory?”

“What do you mean?”

“You seem… animated tonight. Is everything good between you and Kelly?”

“It’s just that she never says what she wants. It’s like I’m supposed to read her mind or something. Everything’s a guessing game with her. It’s so tiring! I just wish she would say what she wants instead of getting upset when she doesn’t get the thing she never told me she wanted… ya know?”

“Okay, I’ll text Nero! See, I’m texting him,” I said exaggerating my typing while reading aloud. “Hey Nero, long time no hear from. Did you want to get together to talk about what happened?” I pressed the button. “See, I sent it. It’s done. I’m not trying to get him to read my mind…”

I stopped when my phone dinged.

“Is that him?” Cory asked.

“Yeah.”

Cory sat next to me on my bed and looked at my screen as I read it.

“He says he’s flying out for an away game tomorrow morning.”

“Did you know he had an away game this weekend?”

“No.”

“Ask him if he wants to get together tonight,” Cory suggested.

I looked at Cory to figure out what was going on. “You are awfully invested in this.”

“What? I just want to see you happy. Text it.”

I did what he said and quickly got a reply.

“Can’t. Getting up early,” I read. “What do I text now?” I asked with a hint of snark.

Cory leaned back deep in thought. He really was invested in this more than I was. I wasn’t sure what it was, but something was going on with Cory.

“Maybe you wish him luck on the game and ask if you could get together when he gets back?”

I shrugged and typed it figuring it was as good of a reply as any.

“Sent.”

‘Ok,’ was what followed.
