Merri looked at me nervously. “Do you mind if I hang with you?”

I thought about it. As much as I wanted him to, I wondered if I should let him.

“That’s fine,” I said, walking to my car.

“I didn’t drive, so…”

“Where are you staying?”

“Cali’s bed and breakfast.”

“That’s how you ended up at game night,” I realized.

“I asked him to show me the town’s nightlife.”

I laughed. “I’m sorry about that.”

“Don’t be. Free drinks, hot guys, and if you count what Quin did on our game board corpses, there was dancing. A night can’t get any better than that?”

I laughed. “Well, is there any other part of the town you’d like to see while you’re here?”

Merri smiled.

“I saw on a website that this area has more waterfalls than any other part of the country.”

“Yes. I’ve read that somewhere,” I said, amused that he was quoting my tour company’s website back to me.

“Well, I haven’t made reservations, but it would sure be nice to see some of them.”

“You want a pre-season tour?” I clarified.

“I mean, I don’t want to come across as a big shot, but I do know one of the owners. I might be able to convince him to let us.”

“I hope you know the friendly one. Because the other can be a real asshole.”

Merri gazed into my eyes.

“Oh, I don’t know. I think the other one is pretty nice, too. You should try being nicer to him. At least, that’s what I’m doing,” he said with a vulnerable smile.

My chest clenched hearing his words. Merri was trying to get us to start over. I didn’t hate that idea. And picturing him back in my life felt good.

“Huh! Let me know how that turns out,” I said, holding back everything I wanted to say.

Heading to the office, I parked and walked Merri to the storage area behind the main cabin.

“Titus is the one who usually gives the tours.”

“So, you’re the brains and he’s the brawn,” he said flirtatiously.

“You could say that,” I replied, as my body reacted to his suggestion. “How do you feel about getting wet?”

“You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for you to ask me that,” he said with a smile.

I laughed.

“Be careful what you wish for,” I cautioned him.

“Why? Are you gonna make me regret it?”
