“I don’t think it works like that,” I said unsure what was going on.

“Can I tell you a story?”

Before I could reply, the waiter put his drink in front of him.

“Thank you,” he said with all of the charm in the world. He then turned back to me not waiting for my answer.

“Do you know how my parents found out I was gay?”

“How?” I asked still confused.

“I was 14, still not sure what I was, and there was a boy in my class I had feelings for. Brock. I didn’t know if I was straight or gay, but I knew how I felt about him. I couldn’t stop thinking about him. I decided I needed to be friends with him. The funny part was that he wanted to be friends with me too.

“So, what happens when you put two horny boys in the same room together and they like each other? Stuff happens. And stuff happened one day when I had invited him to my place.

“God damn, the tension between us was insane. It was like being near him made me lose my mind. Losing my mind was the only way I could describe it too, because in my bedroom, without locking my door, the two of us got naked and… let’s just say stuff happened.

“At least, things began to happen. Maybe my mother was walking by and heard Brock groan. Maybe they suspected something and were keeping a watch. But, when my mother opened the door to find me naked with my cock working its way into Brock’s ass, I didn’t have to come out to them,” Sey said with a chuckle.

“And I guess I should have been grateful because after my mother told my father, neither of them tried to pretend it was anything but what it was. Their son was gay and they accepted it. Although, “accept” might be too strong of a word. They tolerated it. But I could see how they truly felt about it every time they looked at me.

“They didn’t despise me. They were just disappointed. It was like their dream died the day they discovered what I was.

“It wasn’t like I could blame them. You know what it’s like to be a part of a family like ours. You are a part of society. There are parties and responsibilities. And now that they had a gay son. I wouldn’t be able to play the role I was born to play. After two hundred years, the power our family wielded would come to an end.

“I, of course, didn’t care anything about that. At the time, all I cared about was finishing what my mother interrupted. Once I did that, and a lot more, I started to care about other things. Things like the shift I felt from my parents.

“It was like, because I was gay, they didn’t have a use for me anymore. I was dead to them. I wanted to get their love back. It felt gone forever.

“And that was when I started hearing about a boy from a prominent Tennessee family who was also gay. I looked him up online and he was cute. It gave me an idea. What if I could still have everything I deserved? What if I could have my birthright as if I were straight?

“That was when I decided to transfer to East Tennessee and find you. I thought convincing you to go out with me was going to be the hard part. But, you asked me out. Gotta say, that was unexpected!” he said raising his glass to me with a smile.

“And meeting you, I knew exactly who you were. I knew what you wanted.

“You wanted to feel loved. We had that in common. I knew how you would respond to grand gestures, so I gave you one. And it only took two dates for you to agree to marry me. Amazing! We were meant to be together, Lou,” he said with a confident smile and a lift of his glass.

I stared at him stunned. If given a thousand years, I would never have guessed any of that. It was disturbing.

“As creepy as all that sounds, Sey, I don’t love you,” I told him delicately.

“Is it the texting?” he asked casually. “It’s the texting. I just get wrapped up in stuff. But, I get it. I’ll do better,” he said taking a relaxed sip of his wine.

I looked at Sey confused.

“I’m not sure you understand what’s going on. I’m breaking up with you. I’m not going to marry you.”

“Yes, you are.”

“I’m pretty sure I’m not.”

“But you will.”

The ridiculousness of this situation finally hit me and I laughed. Sey laughed with me.

“Would you like me to tell you why you will?”

“That would be entertaining,” I told him.
