“I think you’ll know,” he said with a smile.

He wasn’t wrong. It took 5 minutes before he entered the backyard with both of his parents in tow. He carried dishes that he broke one by one. His mother was irate. His father was mostly trying to calm his wife down.

Making sure I had the camera and tape, I exited the room and descended the stairs. When I got to the second floor, I looked around and jumped at what I saw. Lou’s brother was leaning against his bedroom’s doorframe with his arms crossed. It was like he was waiting for me.

When we made eye contact, he laughed and retreated into his room. Shit! That had not gone as planned.

Continuing down and out the front door a little less cockily, I jogged across the driveway and onto the feeder street. Winding my way to the truck, I got in and waited for Lou.

“Chris saw me,” I told Lou when he got in.

“Shit!”

“Yeah.”

“Did he say anything?”

“No. And I got the impression that he wasn’t planning on telling anyone.”

“He likes having something to hold over people. He probably thinks I’m cheating on Sey with you. If he knew what we were about to do, things might be a little different.”

“Then I’m glad he doesn’t,” I said starting the truck and pulling away.

Our first stop in town was at a store that sold cameras and video equipment.

“We’re looking to make a copy of what’s on this,” I told the attendant holding the tape in my hand.

“What is that, mini DV?” he asked examining it.

“I guess. We brought the camera in case you need it.”

I held it up and he took it.

“How long is the footage?”

“Two minutes?” I suggested looking at Lou.

He shrugged.

“To what format?”

“Something we can email,” I said confirming with Lou.

“Give me twenty minutes?” he said taking the tape and camera into the back.

Lou and I looked at each other barely able to believe what was happening. We were doing it. If we got it onto the cloud, his family could never take it away from us. Lou was almost free.

Paying for it minutes later, a copy of the file arrived in Lou’s inbox. Opening it and watching it again brought tears to Lou’s eyes.

“Now what?” he asked me.

“Now we figure out when she died.”

“How do we do that?”

I thought about it and then turned to the attendant.

“You guys have a library in town, right?”
