“Why do you owe me?”

I apologized, reconsidering what I said. I couldn’t tell him that the reason his mother was in the hospital was because of me. I didn’t know much, but I knew that wasn’t something that you said in a job interview.

“It was my car your mother had the accident in.”

“Which is why, if anything, I owe you.”

I smiled.

“Then, if you do owe me, you can pay me back by letting me help you,” I said beaming about how clever I was. “I mean, you kind of owe me at least that, don’t you?”

Cali cracked a smile. It was his first. It sent a rush through me that made my balls tingle.

“I guess I do.”

“Does that mean you’ll let me help you?”

“It’s the least I can do.”

Feeling over the moon, I caught myself before I got too excited.

“Umm, here is probably where I should tell you that I don’t really have any experience with stuff.”

“When you say ‘stuff,’ what are you referring to?”

“Bed-and-breakfast stuff. Life stuff. Really, you could just take your pick.”

I was expecting him to look at me like the pathetic loser that I was. But he didn’t. It was almost like he felt sorry for me, but not in a pathetic way. With one look, he seemed to tell me that he would take care of me. I had to be looking way too much into it, but it made me feel good.

“I can teach you,” he conceded.

“I swear I’ll be the best student. What will it be first, Teach?”

“We could start with how to wash dishes,” he said, confusing me.

“What do you mean? That’s the one thing I figured out how to do,” I said, pointing at the dishes in the drainer.

“His eyes bounced to the dishes and then back towards me.

“What?” I asked when he didn’t say anything.

“You did a great job. Although, you might have missed a spot or two.”

I turned back towards the dishes again. I didn’t know what he was talking about until I inspected them closer. It was like, until that very moment, the spots were invisible. It had to be some sort of crazy dishwashing magic.

“Oh!” I said, turning to him embarrassed.

He chuckled, seemingly amused.

Chapter 4

Cali

Staring into Hil’s large brown eyes, I wondered what I had gotten myself into. He did something to me. Standing as close to him as I was, all I could think about was pushing my fingers through his large curls, wrapping my other hand around his small waist and kissing him hard.

Should I be thinking about a guy like him at a time like this? Probably not. But I couldn’t help it. From the moment I saw him standing next to Marcus at the hospital, I lost a little of myself.

Titus and I had spoken a lot since finding out we were brothers. Much of it was about how he felt finally dating the guy he had been in love with for so long. He told me that from the moment he met Lou, it felt different. He was right.
