What Dr. Sonya needed was help starting her day. First, she needed help getting to the bathroom. Then, she needed help changing, brushing her teeth, fixing her hair, and then getting back into bed. Thinking about Cali the entire time, I told Dr. Sonya that I was going to make breakfast and then hurried to our room.

Opening the door, I found the bed empty. Looking at the clock on the night stand, I saw it was later than I had thought. If Cali didn’t leave soon, he would be late for class. So, instead of stripping down and waiting for him to return from the hallway bathroom, I headed downstairs to make him waffles and to begin our first day as whatever we were to each other.

Mixing the ingredients as I had been shown, it wasn’t too long until I had a batter that dripped off the fork in clumps. It was the right consistency and as long as I didn’t miss spots on the waffle maker with the nonstick spray, I had a good shot at not screwing it up.

When the first one came out golden brown, I was beside myself. Not only did they look good but they smelled fantastic. I couldn’t take any credit for this. All I had done was not screw it up. This was Cali’s family recipe. I was just grateful that he had shared it with me.

“I know what these waffles could use,” I said aloud, “fresh berries,” I said before pouring more batter into the waffle maker and hurrying to the door.

Slipping on shoes, I exited onto the porch. Although where Cali had taken me to pick berries was beautiful, I later learned that there were also wild bushes on the edge of their property where it met the woods.

Knowing there were a few ripe ones left from the last time I went picking, I headed to them. Not paying attention to the road in front of the property, I looked up when I heard a car engine startup and pull off.

The car I spotted looked as out of place in this small town as mine had. I had only caught the back of it, but I had seen enough luxury cars to know what it was. It had been a C-Class. It stood out like a sore thumb in the land of trucks.

Frozen, I considered what I had seen. Why was that car parked in front of the bed-and-breakfast? And why did it pull off when I came out?

I would have stood there thinking about it for much longer if I didn’t remember that I had left the waffle maker cooking. Returning to my berry hunt and retrieving a few for breakfast, I scurried back to the kitchen and returned to my task.

No longer able to bask in the glow of the night before, I finished making breakfast with something else on my mind. Who had been parked out front? In truth, it could have been anybody. Maybe there someone due to check in today who I didn’t know about. Maybe someone had gotten lost and had thought that that was a safe place to check their map.

The option that unsettled me was that it was someone from my past. C-Classes were common in my world. Could that have been the person who had run Dr. Sonya off the road thinking it was me? Had the danger I had put everyone in returned?

“They smell incredible,” Cali said, making me jump.

“Oh man, you startled me.”

“I’m sorry, Baby. What’s got you so tense? I would have thought you’d be more relaxed after last night,” he said with a smile.

I laughed at myself.

“I should be, right? By the way, is not being able to walk straight the next morning usual after being with you?”

Cali smiled again. “Want a massage to make it feel better,” he said, wrapping his large hands around my ass.

“Probably. But don’t you have to head out soon? I don’t want you speeding to catch your class and getting into an accident.”

Cali let me go and examined the plate I had prepared for him. Completing it with a smiley face made out of berries, I handed it to him.

“Aw. Thank you, Baby. It looks so good, I don’t even want to eat it.”

“Well, you have to. Because you need to tell me whether it’s good enough to serve to your mother.”

“However it tastes, I’m sure she’ll love it.”

“Thank you. But, seriously, tell me what you think. I might have added too much tamarind powder. And if I did, I will be making it again. Now, sit. Eat.”

Sitting at the small table on the far side of the kitchen, he dug in.

“Mmmm. Baby, these are good!”

“You think so?” I asked nervously.

Before I could finish worrying about it, Cali finished the waffles and handed me the plate.

“It’s the second-best thing I had all morning.”

“The second best?” I asked confused.
