“That’s fine. I can drive you home afterward, too. If you like.” He squeezed my knee. “Drew will vouch for me, promise.”

“That’s Ward’s friend? The lawyer? You work for him?”

“Yes. To all of that. I’m a lawyer.”

I nodded. I normally stayed away from lawyers simply because my ass-hole dad was a lawyer, but Quinn was nice. He didn’t seem like the typical, stuffy guy I expected, but that was probably stereotyping. “I work at the same company as Jax. Different area.”

“You’re a computer guy?”

“No. I’m a consultant, mainly in marketing. I help others with their strategy, campaigns, and things like that.”

“Lovely.”

“I like it well enough most of the time.”

“I meant your smile.”

“Are you hitting on me, Mr. Quinn?”

“Mr. Setzer. But please do call me Quinn.” And then he smiled so brightly I thought I might let him drive me anywhere just to see it again. “And yes. If you want me to.”

“Quinn, okay. Yes. I want you to. Let me get changed, and we’ll go.”

We went for drinks at Ward’s and then he drove me home. I liked everything about him, especially the part where he liked the pup play. “I, uh, I like being a daddy and being a, what did you call it?”

“Handler?”

“Yes. Handler is like being a daddy. Not too different, only caring for a pup instead of a boy.”

“I think you’re right, and we can find our own dynamic. What works for us. You bet I like hearing a good boy now and then.”

“You wouldn’t mind calling me daddy?” he asked, and I could see the bright hope in his eyes. I recognized it because it matched mine.

“Not at all.” I heard a small intake of breath, so I tacked on, “Daddy.” And he gasped.

Yep, getting involved with him would be like dating a warm snugly blanket. Maybe I needed that in my life. Well, no maybe about it. My dad was rapidly becoming a problem and disrupting my world, and some comfort would be a perfect balance. I was looking forward to it so much that I didn’t want to get out of the car when I got to my complex later that night.

“You live here, huh?”

“Yep.”

We sat quietly in his sedan. I wanted to ask him in, but I had work in the morning, and we had only met earlier that day, even though it felt longer already. “Let’s take it slow. Next time, I might invite you up.”

“Whatever pace you want, pup.” My heart warmed at the endearment.

I leaned over the consul and kissed him. It was soft and sweet. “More later. Good night.”

“Night, pup.”

This was an incredible start. “Call me. Jax has my number.”

“You bet.”

I waved as he drove away, but I couldn’t wait for our next date.
