“It was the middle of the night.” Even if my words weren’t wobbly, my argument would be weak at best. It wouldn’t have mattered if he came home at four in the morning or four in the afternoon. I’d have been perched on his steps, waiting for him.

That’s the problem.

I was scared.

Scared of losing him.

Scared I’d already fallen too far to ever find my way back.

Declan does that twisting thing with his fingers and my knees nearly buckle. “Tell me the truth, Cassidy. Tell me how you feel about me. Tell me what is really happening between us.”

“Not fair with your fingers doing—that!” He rubs his thumb against my clit, intensifying every sensation even more. I’m about to go blind from the wave of pleasure building when he pulls his hand out and steps back. “What the—”

“Can you say it now?”

I can’t seem to look him in the eyes without waves upon wave of emotion hitting me square in the feels, so I stop trying. “This is just some adult fun. You knew that.”

In the next instant, I’m caged again. Three fingers plunge into me, finishing me off in seconds. I come so hard my orgasm gushes into his hand. Fuck me, that’s never happened before. I’ve heard about it, but Declan’s the first to draw it out of me. I’m … shocked. And desperate for more of this man I’m trying so hard to resist.

“This isn’t about lust, sweetheart. I love you. This is fucking real,” he says, his gaze boring into mine as he pushes off the wall, taking his hand with him. Leaving me panting and on the edge. “When you figure that out, you know where to find me.”

I’m plastered to the wall as the front door slams. I’m panting so heavily I can’t move.

There’s a blur of movement near the bar, and I snap my head to see beady-eyed Charlotte herself giving me her best demon stare. I’m so not in the mood for this shit. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll find a new bar to haunt.”

As if the spider understands, she dashes back into the cover of darkness.

DECLAN

“You’re still here?” Haley says, poking her head into the animal shelter office. The sun set an hour ago, but I have no desire to leave. Even with the numbers updated and triple checked.

“You think I should adopt a cat?”

“Oh Declan.” Haley comes into the office and shuts the door behind her. “I’m sorry about Cassidy.”

It’s been two weeks. Two fucking weeks. I thought I was a patient man, but it turns out I’m not. I’ve been losing my ever-loving mind without her.

“Maybe I’m a fool,” I mutter into my hands as I scrub them over my face. I haven’t been sleeping or shaving, and both are starting to show. It’s why I’ve stopped looking in the mirror in the morning.

“You’re not a fool.” Haley pats me on the shoulder. “You love her.”

“Wish I didn’t.”

Haley folds her arms across her chest. “You don’t mean that.”

“Easy for you to say.”

She lets out an incredulous laugh at that. “Are you kidding me?”

It takes me three second to realize I misspoke. If anyone knows the torture of waiting for someone for a long fucking period of time, it’s my sister. “Okay, I take it back.”

“You remember that golden doodle we had in the shelter a couple months ago? The one that was so scared he shook anytime someone stopped in front of his kennel and just looked at him?”

“Yeah. You worked with him for weeks.”

“And now he’s not afraid anymore. He’s been adopted into a loving family and is thriving. He just needed some time to trust everything was going to be okay. That the whole world wasn’t out to hurt him.” Haley pats my shoulder again and gives it a painful squeeze to really drive her point home. “I have a feeling she’ll come around.”
