Somewhere in the back of my mind, I hear a faint ringing of warning bells. But I tell those jackasses to shut the hell up and grip Declan’s neck with both hands. My breasts smash against his hard chest, my nipples tightening. I arch my back into the man’s deliciously hard body as his hand slides up my lower back.

Just when things are starting to get too good for me to care that I’ve been resisting this, the shrill, deafening sound of a siren slices right through our passionate moment.

“Fuck,” Declan mutters, breaking apart the potent kiss. “I have to go.”

“Are we under attack?”

His eyes twinkle for a brief moment before they turn serious. “It’s the fire whistle.”

“Fire—”

“Duty calls. I’ll be back.” He cups my cheek roughly, stealing another kiss that turns my knees to liquid in point three seconds. When he comes up for air, I have to grab the bar with both hands to keep from melting into a puddle on the floor. “We’re not done here.”

DECLAN

My shoulders and traps ache like a fucking fire has rippled through them. It hurts just to lift my hand to the keyhole as I lock up The Book Cellar for the night. I had hoped to find Cassidy still working when I returned from what was thankfully a small brush fire at the edge of town. A generous amount of rain helped keep the flames contained in a single, shallow ditch.

But the curvy beauty had locked up for the night when Micah and I returned to keep working. As tired as we both were, I would be damned to delay her grand opening. Even if it costs me a blank-check type favor with Micah in the future—always a dangerous thing to owe him.

“I’m showering first,” Micah announces, clapping me on the shoulder. “And I make no promises about leaving any hot water for you, my friend.”

“Fucker,” I mutter with a chuckle. Little does he know that a cold stream of water is exactly what I need. My dick’s been half-hard since that earlier kiss. I expected the taste of Cassidy’s lips to change my world, but I had no idea that the fucking earth would quake beneath our feet. If I had any shadow of a doubt about us belonging together, it was eradicated the moment our hungry mouths found one another.

“You guys came back?” Cassidy’s angelic voice might be an illusion drummed up by my exhaustion, but I turn to find out if she’s real anyway.

And she is.

Fuck me, this woman appears more stunning each time I run into her. Tonight, she’s wearing loose black shorts that showcase her long legs and accentuate those curvy hips she tries to hide with a light pink t-shirt whose v-cut is much too low for anyone’s eyes but mine.

“You have a grand opening soon,” I say, feeling the exhaustion lift right from me.

“How bad was the fire?” Cassidy asks, the worried look in her eyes impossible to miss. My cock twitches in approval, the eager fucker ready to show his appreciation. I’m wearing her down, and this time, it doesn’t cost me any effort. Soon, Cassidy James. Soon I’ll make you mine once and for all.

“Just a brush fire,” Micah answers with a giant yawn. “You can check the Facebook page, you know.”

“The what?” Cassidy asks, her gaze bouncing back and forth between us.

“We have a page on social media where our dispatcher posts updates,” Micah further explains, another yawn assaulting him. I, on the other hand, am completely awake now. “Keeps people from being nosy and getting in the way.”

“Really?”

“Small town,” I add.

“Oh, yeah. I keep forgetting that.” She flickers her gaze to mine, offering me a shy smile. “I’m glad you’re okay.” She looks to Micah. “Both of you.”

“I’ll see you at home, Deck.”

I wave Micah off, pretending like my heart isn’t thundering in my chest. Cassidy has gone to great lengths to keep us from ending up alone together. After that fiery kiss, there’s no denying what’s between us. But this is the first time we have the cover of darkness offering us a place to hide away from the rest of the world.

“You were worried, sweetheart?” I dare to close the gap between us, reaching for her hand and squeezing.

“No,” she says instantly. “Yes. Maybe. So what?”

I gently tug her closer, spinning us until her back faces the brick wall. The Book Cellar is down a few steps, in the basement of the hardware store. But if we move down those steps, a motion light will reveal us. Right now, I don’t want to be caught. I don’t want to be stopped. “Need a hand inside?”

She threads her fingers through mine and tugs me to her. “I need a hand,” she says, her voice husky with need.
