El Cazador had definitely reached Fossil Hill.

Swiftly forwarding this e-mail as well, he spun away, holstered one gun at his waist, then grabbed his wide elastic ankle holster from a bureau drawer, and fastened it and a smaller gun in place. He was now armed and ready...but for what?

He still didn’t know who he was looking for. Any stranger on the street could be a tourist. Or a cold-blooded killer.

And Zach might not know the difference until it was too late to react.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Dusk had fallen by the time Zach strode through the front door of Dana’s house, his face grim. Molly and Katie were already out in the barn with the pony, and Dana had almost finished racking dishes in the dishwasher.

“Guess I missed dessert,” he said as he entered. He scanned the room quickly, then focused on her. “Where are the kids?”

“We decided to save dessert until you got back and the girls were done riding Penelope. Alex, of course, is puttering with his computer.” She tipped her head toward the counter, where an electric coffeemaker gurgled and spat. “Want some coffee? It’s just about done.”

The phone rang, and he moved to grab it before she did. “Rocking H.” After listening for a moment, he held it out to her. “Guess it’s for you. Horse with a leg injury.”

“I think we could have guessed. It never fails—you come over, and I’m in demand.”

Dana slid the last plate into the dishwasher, filled the detergent dispenser and slammed the door shut, then turned on the machine as she lifted the phone to her ear.

Zach watched her intently as she talked to the client on the phone and wrote down directions. The moment she hung up, he peered over her shoulder at what she’d written.

“I thought you knew everyone around here,” he said.

“Not outside of Fossil Hill. There are some towns south of here that have been growing—city people who buy twenty or thirty acres so they can hobby-farm, maybe have a few horses.”

“You’ve never met this caller before?”

“Nope.” She flashed him a grin, hoping to lighten his mood. “Guess my fame is spreading far and wide.”

“But it’s practically dark.”

“Yes, so...is that a problem?”

“I don’t think you should go. You don’t know this guy. How do you know you’ll be safe? A lone woman out on isolated roads—it could be a setup.”
